I was watching Globe Trekker. They covered various parts of the Middle East. I think the spot I saw was Oman. They served camel meat.Anyone here tried it?

    Does it taste "just like chicken"? We are always assured that any other odd meat (rattlesnake, lizard, etc.) tastes just like chicken, so I am prepared for someone to say that in this case. However, I am just going to guess that it would be more similar to goat, or llama, or...

      I waited for them to say that. But it never happened. She did mention it was fatty. They served them as kebobs, looked like a street vendor.

        Tastes like goat. Not bad...just put a bunch of hot sauce...hirisha is there hot sauce of the middle east, I think...and it's a good lunch.

          I had camel milk at the Afghan Dairy in Herat, Afghanistan in '74, it wasn't bad at all, a bit watery, not unlike [water] buffalo milk, which is the standard for India and Pakistan, but basically, if it's got an udder, they'll milk it and use it whether it moos, bleats, or barks.
          Oman is an oil-rich Arab emirate right on the Gulf (short pipeline to a tanker) where they enjoy a very healthy economy and can afford to eat camel at feasts; most other middle eastern and south Asian countries who depend on camels for transportation and freight would never consider butchering a camel unless it dropped dead from old age, and then, as in many frugal economies, it was a likely candidate for stew meat.               In North Africa, where camel is sometimes eaten, could it be served with harissa? Harissa is a North African condiment, not to be confused with Middle Eastern food. North African food is an entirely different thing. I love both Middle Eastern food and North African food, but they are different.
