 PALS Hot dogs

PALS Hot dogs Tue, 05/2/06 8:30 AM (permalink)
While traveling through northeast Tennessee, I saw numerous unusual architectually designed hot dog places called "PALS". I did not have time to stop one time and the next time, I had just eaten breakfast at a place Sauceman had suggested and I was totally stuffed.

Does anyone know anything about their quality, taste and what they offer?

All the buildings were identical, blue with a huge hot dog on top.

My guess is that it is a small independently owned business. I googled them and apparently they do not have a web site.

I've written a good bit about this regional chain. In fact, it's the only chain I've ever written about. There are 20 stores, in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. They have no plans to expand beyond a 60-mile radius of Kingsport, Tennessee. This year mark's the 50th anniversary of the company. I could tell you a whole lot more, but for the sake of brevity, one major point is the fact that, thus far, Pal's is the only restaurant company in America to have won the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.

Fred - Being ISO 9000, and a quality management system only gives me the warm & fuzzies that I won't get sick.... a good description from one who has eaten their product(s) would be a good thing :-) especially an in-depth description, as I do not have any PALs nearby. I live vicariously through you guys.

This column's a few years old, but the business itself hasn't changed much since I first wrote it. The owners of this company are top-drawer folks. I take students over to Kingsport every semester so they can hear the Pal's success story first-hand.

Sauceman: That is one great story. I know how difficult it is to obtain the award as the company I retired from worked toward it for several years without ever receiving.

The next time I drive by a Pal's, you can bet I will stop. I believe the closest one is in Morristown.

            Thanks for your input.

I am really impressed with the goals of this restaurant. Thanks again Sauceman for the info on how this restaurant won the award. I believe few will recoginize how difficult this is to achieve. It is a mark of being consistent with your goals and demonstrating it and proving it.

The Malcolm Baldridge award is gained by few.

I am anxious to try PALS. Anyone who tries this hard deserves a lot of business.

Thanks Buckshot: Due to your response and our friend in Johnson City (Sauceman) I will visit them very soon.

What is your favorite on the menu?

                    Hey Sundancer,

Did you ever go to pals and try it out? I know this thread is old, but Pals is worth bringing back up. I live in Morristown, and have been eating pals for a while. THe pals in Morristown not only has great food, but its the only place you can go that always has fresh food and never messes the order up. The guy that owns this one is very particular about every part of the way his business is run. Its super clean inside and out. I'm about to go there now and get a double big pal with cheese and fries for lunch.

I've also ate the Pals in church hill off 11W, the one in Johnson City off I-81 exit 59, the other one in Johnson City thats on Bristol Highway I think. I've never had a bad experience eating at pals. All the Pals seem to be the same as far as quality/cleanliness.

I stopped at PALS a couple of weeks ago in Kingsport, TN while racing at Bristol. Great service, very clean, drive through only, order perfect and the hot dogs were super and the cheese burger and fries were outstanding.

Fred Sauceman got it right on this small chain.

Sorry for the delay in replying, but hot dogs are my favorite at Pals. Good burgers too, but the dogs are the best!

Did you ever go to the last remaining "Blue Circle" in Bristol on any of your racing jaunts?

You can't get better fast food than Pal's. I've been eating there since I was a child and have never had a bad experience. I've never even had a stale order of frenchie fries. Supposedly, they make a killer grilled cheese that's not on the menu but you can ask for.

I grew up in in Florida...I try to get back home at least once a year...and one of the first things I do is go to the original Pal's downtown and order up three Pal's hot dogs with chili...the best...I know the recipe is secret, but I am sure trying to find it out....they are the best...melt in your mouth....

Pal's serves a very good hot dog - much like a NY System found in RI, although not quite as good (it's primarily their sauce topping that makes them, so don't try to special order, except perhaps to omit the mustard) . Fries are frozen potatoes, but they are typically served fresh with season salt - quite good for a frozen product. Never cared much for their burgers, but they have a ham sandwich which is quite good & a change from typical fast fare. Stay away from their shakes (terrible).

About the only thing on Pals menu that I really like is the sauceburger w/cheese. IMO their hotdogs are on par with convenience store dogs. I do think their fries are ok.

Here is a link to some photos of Pal's #1 and Pal's #2 in Kingsport, both of which are unique in design from the others l;ocations in the chain.

Not as much a fan of the burgers (I like my burgers plain, and there isn't enough "grill" here)but the hotdogs are excellent!

                                    I love this site
I stumbled on Pals in 1994 while driving through Kingsport. I had no clue they were had more locations. I'm in Johnson City for a couple of days, and needed a quick bite for dinner tonight to go along with a couple of hours work in the hotel. Those hot dogs hit the spot!
