Beef on Weck dilemma

Am flying in to Buffalo on Tuesday and have time for beef on weck either at Schwabl's or at Charlie the Butcher's ...

Which is better? I think Schwabl's is the nicer restaurant, but I would appreciate recommendations on the sandwich -- roll, beef, jus etc.

If time is an issue, Charlie the Butcher is right near the airport. I don't know that there is going to be too much difference in quality -- some folks will prefer one and some will prefer the other -- kind of like folks' preference for wings in Buffalo -- doesn't mean that one is better than another -- just preferences.

Pray tell what is "Beef on Weck"? Just an 'ol southern gal here, we ain't never hered of that.

It's just a fresh sliced roast beef sandwich on a kummelweck roll, which is coated with carraway seeds and salt. See above photos. It's a Buffalo thing. Read the restaurant reviews on the home page using the search feature.

Weck is short for kummelweck. Kummelweck is sort of a Kaiser roll with salt and caraway (I think) seeds on top. Kummelweck is popular in the Buffalo area. So, a Beef on Weck is just a roast beef sandwich on that type of roll.

and don't forget Andersons (where they have great ice cream & custard,as well!), and Ted's , where you can get a good hot dog, too..

both have multiple locations..

I got turned off by Schwabls; I was there in Oct. (1st time exploring Buffalo), and every table was taken, as it's a small, homey place, packed in very tightly.......so I asked to take out a sandwich.......and the carver said , with an air of "snootery", "We don't dooooo takeout here".....
like it was the Four Seasons , or something.....

I'm the kind of gal that often ventures on my own, as I'm real independant............so many times, take-out is simpler..

plus that would have been my 3rd Beef on Weck that day, so I was in a takeout mood by that point!

Well, I left place, mumbling something to the guy like "it's your loss!"

WJ, Eckl's has always been mentioned as one of the top places for beef on weck, only it's just not as convenient for visitors to get to. I have not been there, but it's still on my list of places to try. Who knew it was so much more? Thanks for that link.

Beef on weck was the only thing many years ago that made me consider taking a job in Buffalo. I flew in fron NC, where it was 60F, to a sleet and ice storm. Lunch was beef on weck, loved it, but the conversation turned to someone who was in a rush to pour a foundation before the ground FROZE for the winter. The rest of the interview was a waste...I don't live where the ground freezes for the winter.

I now make my own version of it w/ London Broil and yeast roll w/ salt on top (we make the yeast roll and use a VERY coarse salt sourced at an oriental market).

If you'e in a hurry, you might try Anderson's - they serve beef on weck and frozen custard. Sort of a small local chain. They have a bunch of locations around suburban Buffalo, and I remember it as being pretty good.

Signman, I was there approximately 4 or 5 years ago and I thought the Sandwich was just as good as the one served at Schwabl's

I can't remember if I was at the VFW or American Legion for a wedding in Lockport. But the Beef on Weck was great. Well, we made beef on Weck. they had the roast beef and the kimmelweck rolls in the buffet. So, I made sure I made a sandwich (yeah, it was a buffet wedding. Whadoyawant? it was in Lockport afterall)
