Anybody ever read this book? It was set during WW II. It's about 3 elderly women - they live in a junkyard. One, Mrs. Rasmussen, is an incredible cook and can make meals out of anything, which is fortunate because they are very poor. The other two ladies are the lady who owns the junk yard and a retired music teacher who is very good at anything artistic (including decorating). They are helped by a handyman named Old Timer, who says very little. Anyway, they drink a lot of beer (usually bought by the bucket for a nickel) and eat amazing meals lovingly described through a series of 5 books - including a cross country trip (before interstates). Not exactly roadfood, but fiction in the spirit of roadfood. I read these as a teenager and forgot the name until I was reminded today. Apparently. Mrs. Rasmussen has a cookbook (the one-armed cookbook) as the other arm has beer in it - I bet there are some great old fashioned recipes in it!

It looked so funny, I just placed a bid on Ebay for it.
    Thanks!

It's one of the funniest books I ever read. I've had a copy for years. I believe the author's name is Mary Lasswell. There's actually a whole series, I think about four in all. Mrs Rasmussen's cookbook, is, I think, called Mrs Rassmussen Book of One-Armed Cookery, or something silly like that. They take place during WWII and afterward, I believe. Some of the ideas are not considered very PC these days, but what the heck.

      Ya gotta love the ladies!

I'd like to get my hands on all the books, they've been out of print for years, and the copies I've seen are pretty expensive.

Roossy, what'd you pay for yours? Did you see any of the others?

I think I remember one of those books. Did they build a house or a wall or something out of empty beer cans or bottles?

            cheers, John

Yes, Mrs Feely built her wall out of beer cans. This is where Miss Tinkham, the music teacher, meets up with her and Mrs Rasmussen.

God, I want the rest of those books. I tell ya Roossy, if I didn't already have it, I'd give you a run for that book.

Gee, those three ladies sound like our Coppreheadskettle all rolled into one. Bet there are a few off color stories there also. Chow Jim

I think Copper would have been welcomed with open arms by the ladies, and they also would have thumped her good when she got out of control.

Oh, the descriptions of the icy cold beer and the food were amazing......
