Today is flag day. Please make an attempt to display our flag. It use to be a big thing when I was in grammer school back in the 50s but this tradition has seem to by the boards. My local True Value store is offering the Stars and Stripes at their cost, kudos to them. Chow Jim

      Hello All,
Jimeats and Copper, I applaud your sentiments, actually envy them.
When I was a teenager and my brother was in Vietnam, we put the flag
out everyday. I was confused. I didn't support the war, but my brother
was there, and dang it, I loved him and didn't want him hurt or other
soldiers, who were my brothers because they were Americans.
Today, I'm more confused. I loved my country, but feel less connected
to it. I live in an area that is growing, where profit means more than
local traditions and local values. Politics is local, but we are in
a flux of change. Then I look at national politics, wow, we are one
messed up country when it comes to a national culture. I feel lost
and without an anchor when it comes to my country. All I have is my god and family.
I feel these things, but buck up, and make myself support my local government
and national government because I know the system. But it doesn't have my heart.
I envy you. I know, or hope, we are a good nation, or at least trying to be. But
I, for the moment, have lost the sincerity and faith that I deem is wothy to fly the
      flag of a noble nation.
I won't put out a flag because I don't feel worthy in my heart to. It's not
just not here in me...but I do sincrely, envy you.
I've lost something, and don't know how to get it back. I do want it back.
      Take Care,
      Fieldthistle

        I have my flag flying!

Today is also my baby brothers birthday. When he was little he was amazed at how many people put out flags just for his day. I might have told him that part.

I don't think it is celebrated much or taught in many schools but I for one remember what day it is and why. Fieldthistle, I hope you find what you are looking for. I've been there too and it's a strange world we live in today, nothing is simple.

Sometimes I have to look at things from a much broader perspective in order to live with them. I believe the media uses the flag too often when it comes to that precious piece of cloth standing for WAR. The desecration of it astounds me. Not by other countries, I expect that........ but here?
To me it stands for the civil rights movement in the 60's,
its stands for women obtaining the right to vote,
it stands for freedom of speech,
          freedom of the press,
          right to bear arms
          Women's right to choose
          .....etc.
It stands for AMERICA! As divided as our country seems to be, I remember when 9/11 happened and you rarely passed a house without a flag. Its about having differences of opinion, but when it comes down to it, DON'T "F" WITH US. Dont threaten anyone anywhere between far left to far right. Cos we will stand up together, put our differences aside and be as ONE. I believe this with my whole heart.

Where else can a dead soldier's funeral be demonstrated against? Booing and hissing and just total DIRESPECT for the bereaved family, but they got the right. The idiots don't realize the dead soldier exemplyfies their right to do so, but they got it. So be it.

The flag AINT about the war in Iraq, or George Bush.......its about history starting with the thirteen colonies. If we changed anything this country would not have the freedom to burn the flag that protects it and allows it to do so.

So iffen some doofus (not you "Fieldthistle) decides to burn the flag, which is not about Iraq, ITS OUR FREAKING heritage, then I got the right to Kick their ASS, and serve my time. I got that right too.

Look deeply, Fieldthistle, dont get caught up in the last 3 years.......look at history and that our ancestors set a precedence for the world.

          Respectfully,
          Copper

            Fieldthistle,
I can hear the pain in you writing, and I know that pain, also. I feel that we, the down-to-earth regular go-to-work-and-pay-our-bills Americans, have been deserted by both national parties.

We must start by finding for our local offices people of principles and moral strength. If we start a grass roots movement of voting only for those who understand the true meaning and purpose of America, we will accomplish the impossible. We will recreate our government in the image of the constitution.

Can I ask one favour? If you're going to buy a flag to display, can you PLEASE make sure it's not made in China? There are three companies left in the US that make US flags, the rest come from other countries.

I don't know about you, but for me that is just WRONG.

Fieldthistle, that is the biggest bunch of hooey I've even heard. You won't fly the flag because you disagree with the war in Iraq?

The flag is a symbol of the country's past as much, if not more, than the current events. For the 50 States that are a united Republic. Copper hit the nail on the head, the flag stands as a symbol, that 50 states share the same constitution.

Here's a couple of sites you should browse, to see what it's all about.
                http://www.holidayinsights.com/other/flagday.htm
                http://www.usflag.org/
                http://www.ushistory.org/betsy

so, read, get out your flag, and rise above the pettiness that your not displaying your flag because you disagree with George Bush and show your pride for living in a country which lets all of us speak out against the government that serves us.

I fly the flag because of what my grandfather, uncles and Father did for this country. We used to fly the stars and bars for the other side of the family. I have uncles buried in foreign soil. My Father is buried in a small unknown place outside of Newport, TN. because he survived the wars.

We have a church near our house, Poplar Tent Presbyterian that has gentlemen from the Revolutionary War buried in its ground.

May I humbly recommend you stroll through some such burial sites near you? Read their headstones, think what could have been, consider how lucky we are today, and say a small prayer. Then you will fly the flag w/ pride, IMHO.

A flag has flown here 24-7 since 9-11 and yes it's lit at night, and yes it's american made. There are also somewhere around 5000 red/white/blue lights, twinkle lights,in the trees, rope lights, along the house eve and the ones that line the paths (yes they make colored bulbs) that have stayed on except for power outages since 9-12. It started as a response to the attack but now is meant to honor those who are in harms way and all those who went before.

I was not degrading the flag or people who fly it.
Copper, mbrooks, and others, I hear you and respect.

The mere fact that you are able to disagree is the most important fact of all. In nearly every country in the world, your disagreement w/ gov't would have you locked up or killed. That is the prime reason you should think about when our freedoms are being taken away from self-serving politicians whose only job it seems is to try to get elected and continue this fine country into more socialism.

If you're an American, you are more than worthy.

and, I read your words the way they lay on the page and interpret accordingly. Either way, I urge you to fly your flag - since the day is over, you have the 4th of July and the whole summer, where flag display is always appropriate. You are an American and therefore, you are entitled to fly your flag. So, don't think that just because your heart is heavy that you shouldn't fly your flag. In fact, you should fly it higher.

Like the love and responsiblity that Betsy Ross was feeling when she hand stitched the flag together, let the flag fly and help you sew back together your ideals and fortitude.

                              Hello All,
Scorereader, I am an American, and sincerely grateful that I am.
I appreciate your point of view. I listen to it and understand it.
Actually, I feel blessed for your voice and point of view. You are
sincere and strong in your convictions. It makes me feel, not react
against, but feel what you project with your words.
At the same time, I hear other opinions and points of view that differ
from yours. I treat them with the same respect that I treat yours.
It was a wonderous thing that thirteen colonies could come together
and create a country. It wasn't easy, and they didn't do it completly
right. But they set up a system of laws and procedures that reflected their best, and
they expected that future generations would correct what they didn't have the will
or understanding to do, and deal with a future that they wouldn't have a clue about.
As a child, I almost idealized the South, (I am a Virginian) and loved the idea of
being a "Confederate." The older I grew the more I saw the Civil War as the worst
thing that ever happened to the South. I have friends that still believe the South
was right. But they have no reason to give me why the South was right, except state's
rights. They try to side-step slavery. They ignore some of the good of a federal
system, like Social Security, a National Army that protects us and fights for us,
an interstate highway system, civil rights, etc. .... I believe in this country sometimes more
than my conservative friends. Many want to dismantle my country, wreck havoc on my local community.
I have ideals and fortitude. They make me question what is happening to the country I love.
They make me question myself as I see my society become something I feel a stranger in.
So I must examine myself. Am I right or wrong? I am flexible, but how flexible can I be
before I lose what my God expects of me? How flexible until my God tells me I am wrong?
My country is not my God. The rights that God gives me cannot stop at my country's border.
Ahhh, I am writing too much. Sorry.
To all, I respect your voice and do not intend to offend.
                              Take Care,

all I said was to display a flag on flag day.
I haven't seen the contrary, from either party.

The fact that one displays a flag does not mean they are Republican. Patriotism and Republicanism are different -isms. Your posts suggests that it's Republican to display your flag. Which is hooey.

Any person who says that Patriotism = Republicanism, is off their rocker. Isn't Hillary CLinton as Patriot? John Kerry? Al Gore? John Edwards? I believe, they would consider themselves Patriots. I know Bill Clinton would. He used it in a speech I attended. As Did Hillary in Seneca Falls NY.

The fact that you find it painful that you find your country at odds with itself, shows that you care for it. Otherwise, you wouldn't care and wouldn't feel pain.

Flying the flag means you believe in the ideals of freedom and you care about it.

read this, from democrats.com, and get it straight from the horses mouth if you think my "opinion" is a Republican one.

                                http://www.democrats.com/node/9071

any "democrat" or "liberal" or "independent thinker" who tells you that displaying a flag on flag day means: you support Bush, the war, and everything on the Republican agenda, is selling you something you don't ever want to buy. Our flag was also John F. Kennedy's flag, Franklin D. Roosevelt's, and Thomas Jefferson's.

I want to bring a strange black humor to this subject. We have a flag pole that generally flys the flag.

My Mother was a bit unlucky w/ husbands. Two were killed in WWII by the Japanese and my Father was also a veteren. We therefore have three casket flags we can fly on flag day. Two are interesting as they only have forty eight stars. Dad's has fifty as he died much later.

Does anyone else have special flags for flag day? We fly each man's flag on the day he died but usually fly Dad's on flag day and any other special day.

Am I the only one that reads Fieldthistle's comments as something he feels inside and not as a statement against anyone or anybody? Let's hope someday he regains that inner spark he thinks he lost. I hope he does and I bet he will.

Flag Day is my birthday as well. My grandma told me the same thing. She also usually had a flag on my birthday cake. I wanted a ballerina or something: no. Never.

But being born on Flag Day gave me an interest in American History, which led to a healthy respect for the flag and what it stands for. If I had a flag, it would have been out. In the meantime, I'll help take care of the flag in my workplace. That's a real honor.

Add me to the list of the hopeful. That post left me feeling a bit sad, mostly because I hear similar sentiments expressed too often.
