Lots of ice, please.

Got any useful Spanish phrases to help you order? I wanted lots of ice in my tea at the K&W Cafeteria tonight. Pointing and head shaking finally got it. To help in the future I asked the cashier how to ask for it in Spanish.

    That too, is about the only phrase I know in Spanish..
    You would think that 4 years of straight A spanish in high school, and growing up in Miami, that I would remember a bit more..way too long ago....
    Un poco Palabras en espanol....I think that is how you spell it.

      I had a year in high school. I lived in Houston a long time ago and was doing my laundry at a laundrymat at about 2am. A mexican family was there too. Mom, dad and a 4 year old. I was standing outside when the kid came up to me and started talking up a storm. I looked down and said "No hablo espanol". He looked at me funny and ran to his parents. He talked away to them and he pointed to me and said "No hablo espanol". His parents looked at me and we laughed. The kid didn't understand how I could tell him I didn't speak spanish in spanish.

        I grew up in Texas and my spanish is pathetic. I can somewhat figure it out to read short pieces, and pick out words in a conversation but you DO NOT want me to try to speak it. I used to be able to give the Miranda Warning in spanish, but even that has left my brain by now since its been many years since I had to use it.

          I pretty much do all my ordering and whatever it takes in Mexican Spanish around here. Best tip I can pass on is the word "sin", pronounced "seen". It means without. Sin cebollas, without onions, sin lechuga, without lettuce, sin cerdo, without pork, sin trigo, without wheat, sin manteca, without lard (Good luck with that one).

            I was kicked out of high school (I mean graduated) before a second language was required! Sort of burns me when I go to the Burton Meat Farm (butcher shop)... Have to wait for a customer that can translate for me to get my great fresh cut steaks... All the butchers in there speak no english, yet have some of the best cuts of meat available in town here!

              Tienes el derecho de permanecer en silencio...

              "Sin" is without, "Con" is with (con carne, con queso)
              "Mas" is more, "menos" is less, "demasiado" is too much
              "Sal" is salt, sucre is sugar,
              "Grasa" is grease
              For steak "poco hecho" is rare (little done), "al punto" is medium (to the point), and "muy hecho" is well done, "churruscado" is burnt/charred

                      I larned spanish working at El Chico in dallas back in the early 60s. Those guys wre mostly all on parol and glad to be out. I can not repeat most of that spanish I learned then. I took spanish in collage, I know I can't spell it, but I went, but... didn't learn poop in school.

                      Nothing is spelled right but here goes;

                      Uno mas cerveza porfavor.

                      Mas montakea, = more butter! Not sure but it works. ( I wanrned you about the spelling! )

                      Dos cervezas pleezeee

                      Mas cabrito barbaqa

                      mas manada

                      More tacos

                      Where am I????? ( works sometimes... )
                      Jose = Joe

                          It was 98 and very humid here for the 4th. I made a pitcher of margaritas after dinner using some very fine rock gut tequila. They went down very well. The cook, me, snuck in a shot of El Patron while the blender whirled.

                              Actually, Mike, if you spelled it 'doce' you'd get 12 of them!! Better 'pide mas cerveza'...

                                Oh well. Meaning lost in the translation, I guess.

                                    If I am interpreting your pronunciation correctly, with those words you are more likely to get additional lard (Manteca) than additional butter (Mantequilla [sp?], if I recall correctly). However, if you want more lard, that is usually not a problem at a Mexican restaurant!

                                        No hablo su idioma bien.

                                        I used to love mescal, but I drank more than my share and they said I had to quit. I used to like nothing better than a good Oaxacan mescal in a locally made clay bottle. . . preferably drunk while sitting in the zocalo of Oaxaca City chewing on a couple mushrooms, sipping some Negro Modelo con limone and . . . well, I'll leave it at that. Life's been good to me so far.

                                            "Mas" is more, "menos" is less, "demasiado" is too much

                                            Agree with your post except for " sucre is sugar" sugar is azucar.

                                              We tend to forget that Spanish is spoken in 23 countries and some of the local idioms can be interesting. I remember a movie from Argentina where the actors kept saying plata(silver) and it was translated as salary or money. When I was in Puerto Rico china was used in place of naranja(orange) and I often got confused. In Spain, a tortilla is an egg dish similiar to an omlette . Sucre probably is used as sugar somewhere in the spanish-speaking world.

                                                minnow - sorry you'd think I'd remember that, considering that I advise my diabetic patients to "prueba el azucar dos veces al dia con su maquina" (check the sugar twice a day with your machine)
