Eggplant fries Wed, 07/5/06 12:00 PM (permalink)
When my daughter ordered them at the Bayside in Westport Mass this last week end, I thought "yuuuuch" , but they were actually very good. They look like, and are served like coated french fries, but the flavor is very different. My wife compared them to eggplant parm, without the sauce or cheese. If you see them out on the road, I suggest that you order a serving for the table, just to give them a try.

I've tried turnip fries before (pretty good!), but I'd never heard of eggplant fires. Sounds like they would be worth a go.

I will try them as soon as I can. I love almost anything eggplant. I bet you they would be good dipped into a rich herbed tomato sauce.

Really easy to make....cut the eggplant into "thick" fries. Flour, egg, breadcrumbs and fry. My Mother makes them all the time and they are delicious. Us too, we love anything eggplant, especially caponata.

Or you can slice them paper thin (unpeeled, crosswise) and coat them with seasoned flour and flash fry them. We had these in Montreal and they could be picked up like potato chips and eaten that way. Crisp and sweet, with a wonderful texture and taste.

we used to cut them lengthwise into 1/8 to 1/4 inch flaps, then dip in egg and seasoned flour and pan fry them...yummy!

Try an egg wash followed by cornmeal with salt and pepper. A commercial fish fry, like Zatarain's is good, too. I like to use the little cucumber shaped eggplant, peel them and slice into rounds.

I wanted to find a place to post these pictures. I think this will do. I got these beauties at the Lazy Gecko, a restaurant on the Ohio river in Dayton, KY. This is in the greater Cincinnati area.

Thanks, soozycue. I've never been to the Lazy Gecko, but I do remember reading that they were serving the same fried eggplant that used to be a specialty of the late departed F&N Steakhouse in N. Ky. I'll try to get there soon. I really miss F&N, particularly in cold weather. They had a wonderful fireplace in their bar, and a couple of martinis and fried eggplant in front of the fire cured the worst case of winter blues.

                        Sudie,

Check out their menu. They hint at the fact that they are the same recipe as a bygone restaurant. Of course they are talking about F&N, since the Gecko is located practically across the street!!

I took these pictures over the summer, before I knew how to post pictures. It was great sitting on the river during the summer, and enjoying a martini and fried eggplant!!

Dad used to grow eggplants in his garden, and we ate them fried almost as much as squash, okra, or green tomato. I love them.

Thanks for posting the pictures of the eggplant. They are the biggest selling appetizers on the menu. I am glad you enjoyed them. Next time try the Mahi Mahi sandwich. It is the best selling item. I should know, I own the Lazy Gecko. Contact us at 859-491-GECKO

lleechef - Ain't that the truth! Love fried eggplant, but we don't have any place around here (Huntsville, AL) that serves them. At least that I know of.
