I have had the fortune of seeing 36 0f the 38 plays written by William Shakespeare in a theater(mostly at the Oregon Shakespeare festival in Ashland near the home of revered poster Bill Voss). I have recently begun supplementing this by watching the BBC videos of all the Shakespeare plays (most of the videos wre produced in the 80's) I have seen the videos of the two plays I have not seen in person(Corialanus and Henry VIII). The question: Should I count myself as someone who has seen the entire Shakespeare canon or should I wait until I have seen the last two plays in person? I welcome the opinions of roadfooders as reasonably objective observers.

    Hello All,
Mr. Chips, that is a dilemna for purtist to decide. My first impulse is to say, yes, you've seen the entire canon, but then I wonder what are you seeking. I could watch a Dead-Head concert on T.V., or an opera on T.V.,
but is it the same experience as being there in person? Only you can decide.
I admire your tastes as far as Shakespeare, and I am a believer that his plays need to be seen. There is a magic
that occurs when seeing his plays that doesn't happen (at least with me) when I read them. I envy that you've been able to see 36.
    Take Care,
    Fieldthistle

I think, if you've bothered to see 36 of them live, that you should wait to say you've seen them all until you can say you've seen them all live.

Oh, my, what will you tackle next when you have seen them all? :-)

I was going to invite you to venture south to San Diego's Old Globe Theatre to complete your viewing collection.
Unfortunately, neither of those titles are on this year's schedule (A Midsummer Night's Dream, Othello and Titus Andronicus - in its debut production at the Globe). But that doesn't mean you can't come anyway...
Since you are so close, I would hold out and be a purist, not claim the entire canon until you've seen them in person (she says enviously...)

For your own satisfaction, I also would recommend holding out for the last two "live performances". At that point you can honestly tell yourself (and others) that you've attended the entire list-LIVE.
          Next ?

Make the next two in person. Suffered through 36 you can make another 2. Otherwise it would be like someone who wanted to visit every major league baseball stadium claiming they'd been there because they watched a game on TV (trashy comparison, but whatever)

Mr.Chips, as a roadfooders and reasonably objective observers I would definitely recommend that you wait to see them all in person before you attempt to join the very few of we Shakespearean "snobs" who have indeed seen them all. Perhaps one day you may join our elite group but be forewarned seeing Shakespeare in the state of Oregon my not count as being present at a live performance. .................. lol

Don't worry , Frank. I'll just have somebody from the Oregon Shakespeare festival whack you with the Tony they won for outstanding regional theater. Portland also had a Shakespeare in the Park program and my sister and older son were in productions in this program.

I've seen and read most of them (haven't seen Macbeth, however, and need to rectify the situation). Corialanus is quite entertaining (I've seen it and read it), but is far from being one of his best. You could easily skip it and not miss too much.

Mr. Chips, hold out and go for the last two. Remember....."all that glistens is not gold" Merchant of Venice.

I thought it was 'all that glisters'.....oops.

Let us know when you've seen them all, Mr Chips, and we'll have a party or just make fun of you or something....maybe hurl some Shakespearean oaths or insults at you.

                                                Thou cream-faced loon.

Thank you all for your thoughtful responses. I will just have to wait for Corialanus and Henry VIII to hit a reasonably close theater.
Pswingx, my wife bought me a book of Shakesperean insults and, as you might expect, it has proven useful on many occasions.
