Fried PB Sandwiches

I was reading an old magazine that had a story on fried peanut butter sandwiches - apparently a regional specialty in some part (?) of the USA. Sounds baaaaad to me. Has anyone ever had one?

I grill my PBJ, use strawberry preserves and Jif, treat it like a grilled cheese. Is that what you mean, or by "fried" do you mean battered and fried? I think I'd like it that way too.

not bad but definately sloppy, the pb gets real drippy, just another of the delicious foods that make a mess of the beard...

Yes it said it was FRIED (not grilled)...nuthin' like oil + oil!

I forgot to tell y'all that mine is strictly a knife-and-fork sandwich. I'm a girl and don't have a beard but I hate washing my shirts every time.

I think of frying as being done in a frying pan with butter, oil or lard, DeepFrying is a whole different animal.. A deep fried pbNj does sound TASTY

When we were kids, sometimes Mom made grilled peanut butter sandwiches instead of grilled cheese ones. They were good.

My brother used to cook at a restaurant up in Michigan City where he added a grilled PBJ to the menu. He could not make them fast enought they went over so well. This really brings back memories.

I think if you really want to get the most out of this classic, you need to put some cooked bacon on it before you grill it. Oh, it is so good. I am going to leave work early and go home and make one for me and my kids. They won't know what hit 'em. Thanks for reminding me about these. Fred

I won't fry it, but will eat it with bacon or bananas or pepperoni.

We still do that! Grilled peanut butter sandwhiches are good eating! But I don't think they are road food.

Neither do I, I wish they were. I've never seen them anywhere else but my kitchen...

I'm a big fan of peanut butter and sliced bananas on wheat bread with a little bit of honey, grilled in a pan. Straight up Elvis style. I'm going to have to try it with bacon sometimes. Bacon makes everything better. I have yet to see a grilled peanut butter sangwich in a restaurant, but if I ran a restaurant, it would be on the menu.

I thought that the peanut butter sandwiches made famous by Elvis were fried (grilled)like a grilled cheese sandwich.

Here in MA, I wnt to a diner once in or near Wareham (on the way to Cape Cod) that served an Elvis-themed grilled peanut butter sandwich with french fries. I ordered it..and the waitress didn't understand what I was talking about and she had to study the menu to see what it was. I'm guessing it was not a popular item.

Good news! There is a sandwich shop in NYC that makes "The Elvis". Its a grilled peanut butter, bananas and honey (bacon is extra). I had it and it was a gooey, wonderful mess! Elvis ate these by the ton, literally, except he added bacon and banannas, I believe.

One of my all time favorites but I love it with Welch's Grape Jelly and Jif Peanut Butter. A friend of mine is literally dying to try one!

Grilled PB sandwiches are good. Even better are grilled other nut butter ones, like almond or cashew.
