when i was growing up i lived in long beach,n.y.had a job delivering pizza in the north end, just alittle pizziaria,[buy a slice and a coke.now adays they dont sell a slice and a coke except at costco] .well this old fella when he made a hero,he would cut off the end and pull out the bread ,then take a ladle and pour in the meat with the sause.man real meat and lots of it. in seattle, now adays they split the roll in half and put the meatballs in between and the close it and call it a hero.what do they do in your neighborhood?

Unfortunately, most places dont "gut" the bread anymore before putting on the ingredients. We have a small Italian deli on the east side of Milwaukee that serves hot sandwiches for lunch. They are the real deal(homemade meatballs, sauce, etc..)and they still gut the bread-believing that the bread is more of a vessle for holding the meat, etc....If you can find a good Italian deli in your area, ask them to gut the bread first-if they look at you funny, then they arent authentic!!
