RE: BBQ explosion on Long Island

Newsday had a short review of Second's (under a misleadingly-named heading "New BBQs in Long Beach"): "I enjoyed the meaty barbecued baby back ribs as well as the smoky, burnished chicken, both of which were slow-cooked in the smoker before being finished, with barbecue sauce, on the grill. Thick slices of brisket, glazed by the grill, were excellent. So was the moist corn bread. Macaroni and cheese, cut into squares, was eggy and light. For a finale, I liked the home-style red velvet cake" http://www.newsday.com/features/food/ny-fdnotes5184056apr25,0,438101.story

Hi, I'm new to the forums so 'howdy'! I wanted to pipe in and say that I've visited most of the bbq places on Long Island and my favorites are Seconds in Amityville and Willie B's in Bay Shore. I noticed that someone posted a review of Seconds from Newsday. They also reviewed Willie B's very positively. Has anyone been to the new places in Long Beach? Eric

I FINALLY hit Willie B's today! It was outstanding. Maybe the best I have had in these parts. I'll have to stop in again to be sure!

What did you get? I like the ribs and pulled pork the best there. Have you tried either of the 2 new places around Long Beach? Eric

quote:Originally posted by kyleJohnson Eric, you work at Willie B's! Kyle, No, I don't work at Willie B's. I know Will through the BBQ Brethren and through visiting the store. I'm happy to help him (or any other members of the Brethren) out when needed (like the owners of Taste in Garden City), so I help Will send out his mailing list as he isn't the most technically proficient guy in the world. If I did work there I wouldn't freely recommend that people check out Seconds and some of the other places I like on Long Island. Why did you think I worked there? Eric PS If anyone is interested, they are having a BBQ Brethren cook off in Willie B's parking lot this weekend. Judging and stuff this Sunday.

Eric, sorry I just thought I saw somewhere on the BBQ-Bretheren forum that you worked at Willy's. I had the pulled beef at the Sayville fest from Willy B. I like his sauce alot.

The next time I am in town, I will have to hit Willie B's. Still, I have been impressed with some of the BBQ on Long Island. On my last visit, I hit Bobbique in my old hometown of Patchogue. The ribs were pretty good, but I thought that the mac and cheese side was excellent. I prefer sweet corn, which may not have been in season, but this corn on the cob was at least crunchy and not overcooked and soggy. They also have an impressive beer list, which seemed a little pricey to me, but I guess it is not too bad for NY. They do have some better bar specials. On my last visit, happy hour included most drafts for $3 IIRC. I believe I had the Blue Point Toasted Lager. Sorry for the size, but it was the only way that I could get the detail required for the photo. Bobbique 70 W. Main Street Patchogue, NY 631-447-7744
