Sambo's restaurants Wed, 08/30/06 5:10 PM (permalink)
This was a chain in the south that closed because of the politically insensitive name.
Their restaurants resembled Denny's--even the sign was similar.
Were they related to Denny's?

I suspect someone may be doing a bit of trolling. If this is not so, I apologize. We have covered this topic before.

HI sorry if we've been ove the subject before(repeats seem ta bug some peeps) but,
there IS a restaurant on the Oregon coast (can't remember the town) called
            sambo's
            that USED to be called
            lil black Sambo's
after the child's story- character of the same name...
They've been around awhile and have history all around the restaurant and you can buy the "original" book, lil Black Sambo.
The restaurant serves A bunch of kinds of Pancakes and omelettes and the like. I went there last winter (05)& had really good potato pancakse and bacon and applesause with scrambled eggs. yum.

There were two of them in my part of South Orange County in California. They were built in the early seventies, and were an ok place to get breakfast or a late night after-drinking-too-much meal. I believe they started in Santa Barbara or San Luis Obispo, somewhere in central Calif coastal region.

The Sambo's in San Clemente has been a Marie Callendar's for many years, and the one in Mission Viejo is some kind of retail shop.

Frogger67-when I was brand new to the roadfood forum, i was completely unfamiliar with the program...my suggestion is to check out the forums header at the top of the page and see if what you would like to know is under one of the forums already discussed.Plus it is really interesting!!I had a roadfood "angel" point this out to me when i first started........

Whether the topic has been covered before is immaterial ... frogger67 has under 20 posts, give him/her a break!... if each time we posted a comment we had to do a search to "make sure" it had not been posted before we wouldn't be posting much. The fact is, it is the topic of race that makes people get all bug-eyed and lip-quivering.
Get beyond political correctness ... And get a grip.

Yes, they are related to Denny's. Some Sambo's became Denny's.

Lil black Sambo did not represent an African-American, or an African at all. The story was based on a little eastern Indian boy. The reference "black" causes the same confusion and problems that all "color" references do ... "black" OR "white".
Color is not an ethnicity. Color is not a race. The issue really gets under my skin something fierce. (I have an enormous soapbox for this issue ... but I digress as this forum is about "Breakfast".)

As a little kid I liked the restaurants and loved the children's book (and tigers and pancakes!).

Here is a link to the history of Sambo's restaurant ... http://www.everything2.com/index.pl?node=Sambo's

There IS still an original Sambo's Restaurant in Santa Barbara, CA ...
here is a link to their website ... http://www.sambosrestaurant.com/

There was a Sambo's on Pat Booker Road in Universal City near San Antonio when we first moved
to the Schertz area.I don't know how many were in San Antonio back in the 1970s. I recall the contraversy over the name, and it got changed to something else. However, the place finally closed sometime in the 1980s.I don't remember ever eating at the place.

Incidentally, I used to live just down the street from Lil Sambo's when my first wife was a reporter for the Lincoln City newspaper.
