I just got this crazy thought....do you have to have bread to have a sandwich? Can anyone name any sandwiches that don't have bread??? (forgive me if this is an "out-there" question...sometimes my mind jsut gets carried away...)

Don't get too carried away. Bread makes it a sandwich, just like it is not a motor vehicle without a motor, just like it is not picture post card without a picture, just like it is not a cheesesteak without cheese.....well, you get the idea. The definition of sandwich is something (usually meat) between slices of bread. It has come to mean "between bread" because that's how the inventor (the Earl of Sandwich ) created it. Now it comes with buns, pita bread, etc., but IMHO, there has to be bread to make it a sandwich.

Sure. How about an ice cream sandwich? Would a stuffed quesadilla count? Oreo sandwich cookies? I have this book, SUSAN COSTNER'S GREAT SANDWICHES. In it, there are some unusual choices including a Japanese deep fried eggplant sandwich that has two slices of eggplant on the outside with shrimp and more inside. There is a Angel food cake sandwich with coffee ice cream and chocolate sauce. But even this book has very few selections that do not include some type of bread. mark

Try an open faced sandwich, only one piece of bread. Or better yet, wrap the whole thing in a large romaine lettuce leaf, a lettuce wrap. My children love lettuce wraps but with iceberg lettuce.
