Lik M Ade, etc. Wed, 10/11/06 9:14 AM (permalink)
Or spelled something like that!!!
A recent post on KoolAid reminded me of LikMAid? (or whatever) which was like a derivative of leftover KoolAid. Little packets of horrid sugar flavoring and other substances. i also remember a similar product that came in a long striped paper straw that would get all soggy and rip open and get your fingers covered with this gooky stuff. YumYum. Who remembers these?

When my Mom would question me about what kind of 'junk' I had been eating, It was hard to play innocent and say "Nothing" when my mouth was brightpurple or green or red with the Lik-M-Aid residue. (Childhood Memory #078)!!

I've always been more of a chocolate candy oriented person..there are occassions when I crave something else, but even as a child I never went in for pixie sticks, lik-m-ade, or anything that was granular... I recently tried a pixie stick just to see if I missed something....apparently I did...wow..those are good!

"The Pixy Stix started out as an accident really, with kids driving the development of the product. Originally it was a drink mix in the late 30s, sold as Frutola, but J. Fish Smith found that kids were eating the sweet & sour powder right from the package. He shifted the name to Fruzola and added a spoon. Later it was repackaged with a dipping candy stick as Lik-m-Aid and also sold in little straws ... Pixy Stix. It wasn’t until parents complained about the grainy, sticky powder that Sunline came up with a compressed tablet form, the SweeTart in 1963."

So there you have it ... Pixy Stix, Lik-M-Aid and SweeTarts are all the same thing. And they're now made by Wonka/Nestle.

I remember eating Lik-M-Ade way back when. It came in little paper packets that you ripped the top off of. Then you either poured it directly onto your tongue,(which I could never seem to do), or you poured it into the palm of your hand and licked it out. The same hands that had been petting the dog and handling all kinds of dirty, germy stuff. Shudder. It's a wonder we made it to adulthood without getting some grim disease.
