I'm noticing beef is high on my list of comfort food. Not so sure why. Maybe because it's what my mother cooked.

I have neve understood the infatuation with Mac & Cheese. Other than that and in order of comfort:

Sunny-side up fried eggs, fried bacon AND country ham, cheese grits, whole wheat toast.

County Fried (not Chicken Fried) Steak, mashed 'taters, fresh turnip greens/collards, buttermilk biscuits, country-style cream gravy.

Fried Mullet/Bream/Catfish sides, cole slaw, swamp gravy, hushpuppies.

Meat Loaf, mashed 'taters, Italian style green beans, creamed corn, corn pone.

Beef filet or marinated flank steak, loaded baked potato, salad, garlic bread.

Dessert always would be home-made peach ice cream with sweetened condensed milk as a topping.

Being of two minds I would add these:

Crab Cakes with really good slaw.
                        Oyster Stew.
                        Fried Clams.
                        Liver and Onions.
Hand cut, hand fried(in peanut oil) french fries.

PLUS all the foods previously mentioned. I haven't had a good Chop Suey in years.

For real...5 entree's, sandwiches, soups, sides and deserts and I wouldn't feel so much stress and pressure!

                            I agree...tough to pick 5.

                            1. Turkey and stuffing
                            2. Anything with gravy (that's not sweet)
                            3. Hamburger steak and eggs
                            4. ANY good Mexican food
                            5. Pork chops

I'd add pastrami on rye instead of chili dogs. French dips...melts...brisket...short ribs...

                            OK, I'm digressing now...

Maybe a breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu, then the deserts.

                                1. Chicken Fried Steak
                                2. Fish (about any kind around here)
                                3. Hot Beef Sandwich
                                4. Cheeseburger
                                5. Chicken Strips...(yuck-but their one of our best sellers)

This is assuming potatoes and sides don't count in this.

                                      My comfort choices would be:

                                      1. Baked Ham with scalloped or mashed potatoes and peas.
                                      2. Sheppard's Pie with gravy
                                      3. Lasagna with garlic toast
                                      4. Creamy homemade soups like pea soup, clam chowder, mushroom, potato
                                      5. Ham and Mushroom oven baked omlette with a cheese sauce served with pan fried potato slices and a cup of fruit cocktail.

Truck driver sandwich (hot roast beef on bread with mashed potatoes and gravy).

Chimichanga with a side of refried beans and Mexican rice

Spaghetti with meatballs and really salty thick cut garlic bread

Deep fried Walleye with fries and a side of cottage cheese with candied pineapple

Chili along with a huge cinnamon roll

Perhaps you've never had mac & cheese when prepared well. Have a browned crust on top thick with cheddar cheese and large chunks of cheese mixed with cream and real butter throughout the dish, instead of some powdered cheese mix. Don't overcook the pasta. This type of preparation gets a premium price. You can also do combos such as "Macaroni with Four Cheeses" for a more upscale image and price.

Having this type of dish on the menu offers a choice for many vegetarian customers who eat dairy products, as well as a familiar and well-loved choice for those of us who grew up with Southern-style food.

Looks like Ms. Dot's lunch....if you throw in sweet taters, greens, mashed taters, okra, fresh homemade rolls and cobbler.

I hear tell she is open for business again...if you get to Austin, TX try to set aside time for a lunch a Dot's place.

#1. Macaroni and cheese is my most wonderful comfort food. {Not "Kraft", or "Velveeta"}. Mac and cheese, made well, can be one of the most comforting dishes in the world!! IMHO, if you have never had GOOD mac & cheese, you MUST HAVE NEVER HAD mac & cheese!!

#2. Meatloaf. If it's good, it's good. Meatloaf is a staple, and "Shepherd's Pie" is even better!! Mashed 'taters, veggies and CHEESE can't hurt a dish that's already good!!

#3. Stoned ground grits. The perfect breakfast food. Lots of butter, salt and pepper. Anything on the side of grits, for breakfast, only makes it better!! And you can have grits for lunch, and dinner, too!!

#4. Turkey and stuffing. Nothing else like it. Thanksgiving ROCKS!! YUM!! How can you match the combination of bread and poultry?

#5. Lemon Meringue Pie. Made like my grandma used to, with a handmade crust and hard whipped meringue!! Best dessert in the world!! I miss my grandma's lemon meringue pie!! haven't found any one yet to match it!!

Okay, so you don't agree with me, but these are my comfort foods. YUMMY!!!

                                                {and everything in moderation }
