Keaton's Sauce for Chicken Wed, 11/8/06 12:57 PM (permalink)
Keaton's in Cleveland, NC is now selling its barbecue sauce on-line. It is by far the best barbeuced chicken I have ever had. They also have the recipe on their website. Maybe because it's fried chicken immersed in the sauce. I recommend people trying it out.

I usually just sprinkle hot sauce on my fried chicken but this recipe looks quite intriguing and well worth a try. Thanks!

Neat! Click "sauce" to see the recipe. So, you just dip and do not let it soak?

Has anyone been to Keaton's in Cleveland, NC lately?  On my first trip, it was incredible.  The second visit was not good at all.  I am going to be in the area this weekend and don't want to waste time stopping in if the second visit was more typical now.

            Hey Cliff:

My wife and I stop there about once a year for quite a few years now.  We have had exactly one medicore experience and the rest have been great.  By any chance when it was not good did you get there right before closing (either in the middle of the day or at night)?  Our one bad experience came when we got there about 20 minutes beofre the 2:00 closing time and the chicken was very dry and seemed like it had been sitting around.  So now we just make sure to time it so we get there much earlier in the shift.

We stopped just this past August on the way home from Tybee Island and it was as good if not better than ever.  My wife usually orders one chicken breast when she gets fried chicken and eats about half to 3/4 of it.  When we go to Keaton's, we order a whole chicken and there is never anything left but the bones.  We also always order and extra 8 oz cup of suace on the side and there is never any of that left.

So my recommendation would be to give it another chance but only if you can get there well beofre closing.  Good luck!

Thanks so much for the excellent reply!

The most recent visit was during the middle of the lunch hour on a Saturday, so that wasn't it.  But, when I asked to buy a bumper sticker, the young lady who took my order told me the owners weren't there that day and nobody knew where anything was.  The food took forever and like you said, was very dry.

Anyway, I am relieved to hear that things are still good and another visit is warranted.  I will be there on Saturday and can't wait!

I am so sorry to disappoint you, but I didn't get to Keaton's

Trust me, I really did want to.  The plan was a stop at BBQ Center in Lexington and then on to Keaton's.  But, I did not care for the 'que there and not wanting to leave Lexington on a bad note, I headed over to Lexington #1, an old favorite.  The idea of eating small here went awry, when Mr. Monk kept bringing out samples for me to try.  By the time, I walked out the door, I was stuffed beyond belief.

The good news is that I plan on being back in the area in a couple months, in which Keaton's will be visited early in the day!

Understandable.  If you want NC BBQ, then it would be awful to be in Lexington and not have that craving fulfilled.

I'm looking forward to hearing about it when you do get back there.

What's interesting, is that I was speaking to ChiTownDiner over the weekend and he reminded me of the awful experience he had there last year.  Now, that will not deter me from visiting on my next trip, but Keaton's does seem to have its ups and downs.

Keaton's is still the place for Chicken! The last visit I tried the Banana pudding ( won't do that again) but the Chicken is still very good.  The service is a bit hit or miss but the unique taste is worth the trip.

Hey Wabbit, I was in Kernersville over the weekend, touring Korner's Folly.  Strange place, but very enjoyable to see.

Oh sure, now you tell me!  Like I mentioned previously, Mariton and I will most likely be back in the area in the next couple months.  I will let you know.

Is Keaton's sauce hot?  Sweet?  Vinegary?  Thick?  Thin?

Generally speaking I like "something" on my fried chicken - everything from sour cream, to Frank's, to www.scottsbarbecuesauce.com ,  to honey.

Keaton's imho is more of a dip than sauce. When you place your order they ask "hot" or "mild" I think the Chicken is somewhat fried, them dipped in a boiling pot of sauce. The hot is not at all hot in my opinion.  I can pass on the side's  as they are not that remarkable.. the slaw is tasty but the rest is lack luster.. or perhap's it is just because the Chicken is that good.
