    I've not had this particular hero, but I've tasted the meats and cheeses that Mike sells in the deli, and they are uniformly fantastic.

      I havent had one from where you speak,however,have had the same at our excellent Italian deli,Gloriosos...

        Except for being that long it sounds like a standard sub sandwich to me, although I prefer it with roasted red peppers, black olives, olive oil and oregano, instead of lettuce and tomatoes. At least, that's the way I grew up eating them, and that's how I make them now.

          I grew up eating NY heros with various cuts. Eventhough the history of it's name is based off italian meats and cheeses on long french bread, it's become the standard name we New Yorkers gave to the long sandwich.

            Although a NYC "hero" can be Italian meats & cheeses, I remember it being even more commonly made with hot Italian foods usually also with tomato sauce, like meatballs, chicken parmigiani, eggplant, Italian saugages, etc. or thinks like peppers and eggs also cooked.
