How about a Burger? Tue, 12/12/06 7:40 AM (permalink)
Stopped by the butcher and picked up a pound of Choice Ground Chuck. Mixed it up with some S&P and half a package of.

Into the skillet with some bacon grease

Some onion rings in the oven

Plain old navy beans in the pan

Plate it up and dig in

The burgers were so good we did not use any condiments on them. There’s just a world of difference between the local butcher shop and the supermarket meat

In my opinion, that would make a good early morning breakfast.

Nice pics and I like the idea of adding the herbs and garlic.

I was thinking the opposite. I would think the packaged mix would add way too much salt. I think the better the meat, the less seasoning it needs.

Nice twist... I've used onion soup mix in the past but for a really juicey burger try using a bottled italian salad dressing

I normally use onion soup mix, ran out so I had to improvise. The bottled italian dressing sounds neat. Choice ground chuck stays pretty moist as is, big difference from the select/commercial in supermarkets.

                          John Dear (heheh),
I was just thinkin'. Did you put a whole envelope of the spice mix in just two burgers? Or did you just sprinkle some on? I have a real problem with excessive sodium, so I thought I'd ask.

I used about half of the package mixed in.

Uncle Vic, Thanks but no thanks.

We only use Fresh Ground Chuck for our Sloppy Joe's...I buy the canned sauce at WM,add chopped onions and garlic, plus red and green peppers.Let it set over night in refrig to meld the flavors..It sells quite well..
Everyone seems to forget when Mac Donalds first opened up, they used lard to cook their fries which they did on the spot in each individuak location..They also grilled their burgers..My how things have changed..
They have removed all the taste grabbers..I look forward to visiting the Kids in Cal. so I can go to IN and OUT and have real fries..Kennabec potatoes make a real difference..They have a higher fat content and are used for Potato Chips..

The burgers look as if they have a nice caramelized crust on the outside.

There is a part of me that wants to deride the use of an instant mix. Why use them? I figure that there is a cabinet full of spices and herbs crying out to be used.
Then I think about last night's dinner where I made fried chicken with half a package of Shake and Bake + Panko crumbs. It was served with a side of Spanish style Rice-a-Roni that also had some doctoring.

I know what you mean. Years ago I would not use anything prepackaged, always made spaghetti sauce from my Sicilian Grandmothers recipe, etc. Now I use a lot of it, including Prego speghetti sauce that I doctor up a little. It's gotten to the point where most of it is as good as from scratch and is a lot easier.

I love fried chicken, anymore my wife does it in the oven. It's very good but not as good as when she did it in a heavy skillet.

Oops, I've tried a couple of them. I do not use the entire contents of a package as I'm cooking for just two of us and these packages generally serve four.

You may be pitchin' a tent in John's backyard but I would advise you so do BEFORE January 26th because I will be seeing John in Daytona then and I plan to absorb all that he has to offer, which means there will be nothing left for you.....except in Destin and/or Ft. Walton Beach

I am like John. I only buy my hmburger from the loacl meat market. After getting it from there I dont want to get it from anywhere else. The stuff that Wal-Mart sells is scary.

I'm not a Wal-Mart knocker but I agree about the meat. When they went to the prepackaged stuff I did some burgers on the grill. After cooking there was a big gob of glop (Only way to describe it ) on the bottom of the grill, I threw the burgers away.

i've noticed that "glop" in almost every brand of pre-packaged ground beef, even the frozen stuff from costco. it looks to me like it's cooked blood, but a much higher quantity than ground beef is suppposed to have..

i have a small grocery near me that grinds their own beef daily, and i don't mind paying the higher price for it, especially if i'm making steamers :)

I am not a Wal-Mart kn ocker either. I shop there for a lot of stuff. But I will not touch their meat. Not only did we get cube steak from there that you couldnt hardly eat because of the gristle but I also go a package of chicken wings(Tyson) That didnt even smell good. They werent plucked right either. I will pay more for the amish chicken at Piggly Wiggly.
