Top Ten Soda Fountains

Here is an article from the newspaper in Pittsburgh about a local candy and soda fountain that recently was forced to close. Very sad!

Fairley's Pharmacy in Portland, Oregon features excellent malts, tasty sundaes and a variety of milkshakes. Also egg creams, Green Rivers and gigantic Root Beer Floats. And the very modern wi-fi access and expresso drinks.

Jack's Cafe in Andrea's in Kenosha has a soda fountain that's been in operation
since 1915. They also serve a great patty melt, along with home made soups.

I ate at two old fashioned soda fountains over the weekend around Buffalo. Actually, they are both candy stores that also serve ice cream.

Parkside Candy is an amazing looking place on the inside. The oval room was decorated so you feel like just stepped out of a time machine. Apparently, they filmed some of the scenes for "The Natural" there, which should tell you how old it looks. The ice cream sundae itself was fine, but the atmosphere is what made this place interesting.

I also ate at Condrell's Candy & Ice Cream, which has more of a 50's feel. They use Perry ice cream here, which I enjoyed (especially the cinnamon flavor), but the excellent hot fudge and whipped cream were what made the sundae so impressive.

Zandbros in downtown Sioux Falls, South Dakota-- a newfangled old fashioned soda fountain /arts and gift store. Best of the old and the new. Delicious coffee malts!

Fair Oaks Soda Fountain in South Pasadena, Calif.

My all-time favorite soda fountain is the Wilton Candy Kitchen in Wilton, Iowa. Not only is the place amazing to look at (the building it is in goes back to the 1850's), but George's homemade ice cream is delicious. And owner George Napoulos is hilarious and has a wisecrack for every situation.

If you are driving along I-80 in eastern Iowa, this place is a must stop.
