You can't get more unchained in St. Louis than the Crown Candy Kitchen. It is right off I-70 on St. Louis Avenue - but that exit is for eastbound traffic. The Crown Candy Kitchen, virtually unchanged since 1917 is a neighborhood malt shop with burgers and sandwiches (egg salad is classic). Also the size of the booths are a strong reminder of the days when Americans weighed less. http://stlouis.citysearch.com/review/5735911/?cslink=cs_profile_tabs_user_review

Don't forget the Amana Colonies in Iowa, about 5 miles north of I-80 at exit 220.
