Austin BBQ Meet and Eat Feb. 17-18, 2007
Fri, 01/5/07 7:26 AM
( permalink)
TRIP REPORT PHOTOS OF THE AUSTIN MEET-N-EAT ARE ON PAGES 9 AND 10 OF THIS THREAD. IT WAS A GREAT WEEKEND FOR ALL WHO ATTENDED! Some of us roadfooders will be doing our annual President's Weekend BBQ adventure this year at the Kreutz Market in Lockhart, TX. If anyone is interested, please sign up so we can get a count. This is the third or fourth such trip (last year was at Moonlite BBQ in Owensboro, KY) and has proven to be a fun event. So please come join the fun and festivities. As it stands now, BBQ will happen at Kreutz on the 17th around noon or so, followed by a short drive to Austin for perhaps Mexican or greasy burger at Dan's, then maybe brunch the following day. Details to follow.

I plan on being there if I am still in Houston which it appears that I will. I last visited Kreutz with Bushie about a year ago. The place is huge and the brisket was excellent. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

Janet and I(and the Scotties) are planning to join the fun. We will be driving down from Louisville during the week before that weekend. We hope to visit some places we haven't seen for a few years.(Shiner- Schulenburg-Temple- WEST)We'd like to find some new "Czech Food" locations too! Plus, we haven't been to Louis Muellers for three years. It is time to get a new business card on the Wall of Fame! Count us in for all the fun on Saturday and Sunday. Hard to believe that is only a few weeks away!! Come on folks, a bunch of you indicated earlier that you had an interest in making this get together, check in now, PLEASE.

We moved the thread down to the 'Misc-Food Related' to keep it going without interupting the 'News Forum'. Suggestions for a Sunday Brunch location on the 18th are open. I think Bushie has some ideas on that, but no decision has been made yet. We are also looking at a possible walking tour of the Shiner Brewery earlier Saturday Morning, as the driving distance is not all that far from Lockart!

Sounds great! Since moving to TX we have tried and loved City Market in Luling, Louie Mueller, and Southside Market, but Kreutz was closed whenever we passed through (on Sundays). Speaking of Mexican, my old version of Roadfood lists Joe’s Bakery & Coffee Shop in Austin and it sounds like authentic Mexican Roadfood, is it still around and still good?

I might could bring a few folks to the party. I couldn't make it through there this year, so it sounds fun. We were going to try an outdoor live music venue called Freddie's Place in south Austin. Can anyone give us a review? http://www.freddiesplaceaustin.com/

My son and I also want to join this gastronomic BBQ tour as well. We would want to include "Smitty's" on the tour. That's our favorite. Sounds like great fun. Is this an "organized" event? Will there be a "meeting place" to start? When? Where? Time? Etc. I'm especially interested in meeting everyone and putting faces with the names.

Dear friends, I will have to let you know if I can make it. Finances being what they are I can't say for sure. I did put in for that weekend off from work. I will be there if I can POSSIBLY stretch the bucks to cover plane and hotel. Can someone give me a lift? Alice

We need to focus on one good lunch/dinner (Kreutz Market) on Saturday (noonish) and a Breakfast (TBA) on Sunday. When we started to talk of a trip to Austin last year it was pretty much decided that we aren't up for running from place to place to 'hit' several BBQ locations in the same afternoon. We learned that a multi-stop BBQ afternoon was pretty hard on the system (as the day wore on!) So that's pretty much the agenda. The lunch/dinner on Saturday will occupy a pretty good chunk of time with the meeting and chatting that we have enjoyed so much at the other Roadfood gatherings. If some folks want to do a supper/pub visit type of session that evening you may find several of the group will join in. Joe's was mentioned for Mexican food for breakfast. Bushie took us there a couple of years ago and it was great...BUT it gets PACKED on weekend mornings and the possibility of getting a group in all at once it pert-near impossible! We are open to suggestions for a good breakfast location, but it would have to accept reservations for whatever number we wind up with. PCDIVA, don't give up...we will hear from others shortly and the possibility of a ride in Austin isn't out of order at all.

All: Kreutz is a huge place and should be able to accomodate as many as we bring? Perhaps we should all make that the central place? I am easy and it does not matter to me. It appears that this is gearing up to be another successful February event. If it grows like last February's event did at moonlite, this will be huge. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

Kreutz's sounds good to me. Should someone bring blank nametags so we can identify each other? My mouth is watering for the BBQ and comeraderie.

I will have some Stick-On name tags that we can add names to at the Saturday session. Janet and I will be driving down earlier in the week as said before. we will be somewhere in that part of Texas from Wed. thru Sunday of that week. I expect to be saturated with Czech Food and Texas Style BBQ, and to a lessor degree Tex-Mex also, by the time we saddle up and head Northeast late Sunday. Plus we want a box of Round Rock Do-Nuts too! when we lock in a Motel we'll post it so you'll know where to find us.

Twinwillow's son here. Imho, if you haven't tried Smitty's it's the best in Lockhart! For all those who don't know, Smitty's is the original Kreutz. Kreutz moved down the road to a larger place and the Q does not seem the same because the original, aged pits are down at Smitty's. Don't get me wrong, Kreutz is still good and if you haven't had their famous pork chop then you better go! See y'all soon!

Twin-- Is there someplace on the 'outerloop' around from I-30 to I-35 that we could do a light meal (depending on arrival time of day??) if we leave Monday, and take our time coming down thru Memphis and Texarkana, we are thinking of staying in WEST to check out (pun intended) the Czech food Tuesday evening and Wed. Morning. (TENTATIVE and NOT locked in). Think about a lunch out on the SE side somewhere on Tuesday???? AL

Believe it or not, the place I like the best is Jerry's fried chicken. Great non greasy fresh fried chicken. Cheap too! I always stop for some chicken tenders enroute to, or from Austin. Not only that, but the cheapest gas in North central Texas is in West. I think they all got together to keep the gas prices low so people will stop to gas up and eat when they do.
