The place that I recall serving the pastrami dip is a small chain called "The Hat," though I am sure that there are others. It seemed to me that in LA, nearly every place sold pastrami, of some sort. The signs on the restaurants would read something to the effect of: "BURGERS PASTRAMI TACOS SEAFOOD" It's a little weird.

I loved Phillipe"s atmosphere. To me, the roadfood experience is equal parts food and atmosphere. Phillipe's looks like a place where Phillip Marlowe and Joe Friday would have hung out. I liked the combo of people reading the racing form, guys in suits, people from Chinatown, the cheap coffee and the colorful huevos. The French dip is passable , the atmosphere unforgettable.

The Hat. The original in Alhambra (CA) has been serving pastrami for 50 years. My dad’s office was nearby and I remember eating there with him in the 60’s. They are call “pastrami dip” sandwiches. They are huge piles of hot pastrami on a French roll with mustard and pickles. They dip some juice on the sandwich and roll in it a paper to hold it together. They also sell chili, chili fries and burgers. But they are famous for their pastrami. Go visit: http://www.thehat.com/

If you haven't found one yet you should try Jason's Deli( http://www.jasonsdeli.com/index2.html ). They have what they call the Beefeater, which is a French Dip w/provolone. I had my first for luch today. Pretty good stuff.

I think Arby's may still have the French Dip sub, I remember trying to eat one riding down the road in my moms backseat when I was young and spilling that hot Au jus liquid all over me and her brand new car
