Welcome to Roadfood! Here's a link to a website with reviews of Roanoke restaurants that you might find useful. Not as good as a personal recommendation from someone whose tastes you trust, but better than nothing. http://www.theroanoker.com/Dining/diningreviews/index.cfm If you use the "search" function on the menu bar located above, you can find plenty of other recommendations for the area.

When you are in Lynchburg. Try the Silver Pig BBQ on 29 north. Good eastern style Carolina BBQ very limited menu but a good place for lunch. In downtown Lynchburg I like the Texas Tavern. Basic burgers, chile beans, hot dogs and sandwiches. Frank

In Roanoke I like "Burgers In The Square" for obviously great cheeseburgers, Tudor's bisquit world for breakfast, and for a little more upscale we like "Montano's". In Lynchburg get to the "Yellow Sub" for great sandwiches and go to "Moore's Country Store" for unique and delicious hotdogs. "The Weenie Stand #2" on Timberlake Road has good dogs as well, but we always hit it for their great country breakfast.

"Burgers In The Square" does have excellent burgers. and the waffle style fries are wonderful too. As soon as I find out how I will post a picture. Moore's Country Store was also on my list as of last night. Someone from the area told me to go there and get the "hot, hot" chili on a hot dog and some slaw on top. "Regular chili" there is supposed to be pretty hot So we may need to lighten up on the "hot, hot".

Downtown Roanoke has a number of interesting restaurants. One of my faves is the Roanoke Hot Dog Stand ( I may be a little off on the name), but it's been around since about 1925, and it's a great little joint. I stop there everytime whether I'm hungry or not.

Good Lord in Heaven! The hot dogs at Moore's country store are so good. We walked in about 11:00am and ordered 4. I was going to get more but the line was starting to get pretty long by 11:30am. Take SR-460 east from Lynchburg, VA. It's on the right and has a tree growing up thru the roof. The closest address I can find is "6963 Richmond Hwy, Lynchburg VA". Close to here.Map Looks like this: Picture Here are the dogs:

I had a stewardess on a flight once tell me about Moore's Country Store. She absolutely raved about the place. I will have to stop in the next time I am in the area.

I tried Tudor's Biscuit World. I maybe didn't order the right things, but I wasn't overly impressed. I wouldn't go back. Are they part of the chain?

Having Tudor's here in WV (based here), Hardees biscuits beats Tudor's hands down. I think your opinion is very valid. I only eat Tudor's when I can't find anything else, or I want a biscuit for lunch.

In Roanoke try THE ROANOKE WIENER STAND. TEXAS TAVERN is in ROANOKE not Lynchburg as someone stated. The HOMEPLACE in Catawba some one mentioned in an above thread is a MUST!

Someone stated that the Texas Tavern is not in Lynchburg. There IS a Texas (Tavern) in Lynchburg as well as Roanoke. Because of sale contract waivers it has operated in recent years as the Texas Inn. Same food with a couple of variations. The locals call it the "T Room". Many people still call it Texas Tavern. I don't know of anyone except emplyees & management that call it Texas Inn. Everytime I go back to Lynchburg (known to the locals as "The Burg") I always eat there. I always order a Western with Chili & Relish, a bowl of Chili Beans (known as a "Bowl"), and a frozen mug of Butternilk. I love the place. Great food, just take a shot of Pepto Bismol on the way. Also a must go place is: Daddy Bim's on Old Forest Rd. near Lynchburg College. Bar-B-Que to die for. Gourmet soups and Gourmet specials daily by a WORLD CLASS CHEF. The best in Lynchburg and one of my favorite eateries that I have EVER eaten in, EVER !

Yeah, there might be a place in Lynchburg called Texas Tavern but it is not THE Texas Tavern that has been in Roanoke for 75 plus years.

There were 2 "THE" Texas Taverns. One was/is in Roanoke and the other was/is in Lynchburg for 75 + yrs. Same menu, color scheme, lingo & etc. For many years the Van Cleeves ran the one in Lynchburg. After her husbands death Mrs. Van Cleeve ran the place for a number of years herself. When she sold the place at retirement the buyer got the menu rights but could not use "Tavern" in the name. Hence "Texas Inn". The food tastes the same as it did when I was child. As a teenager I ate at the one in Roanoke a number of times. Same food as Lynchburg. In essence the one in Lynchburg is still the Texas Tavern too.
