HIGHWAY PROJECT WILL SPELL THE END OF A 60-YEAR SE Mon, 02/5/07 2:27 PM (permalink)
Sad news in the newspaper -- was shocked to read this headline:

"HIGHWAY PROJECT WILL SPELL THE END OF A 60-YEAR SEDALIA, MO., TRADITION"

Sedalia, MO. February 3, 2007.

The last chance to enjoy a Sedalia specialty will be Labor Day of this year.

That's when the Wheel-Inn Drive-In will serve its last Guber Burger, a hamburger slathered with peanut butter.

The restaurant is closing because of a construction project that will expand the intersection of US Highway 50 and US Highway 65.

For almost 60 years, a stop at the Wheel-Inn for a Guber Burger has been a fixture of trips to the Ozarks for many Kansas and Missouri families.

In addition to losing this unique treat, the loss of the historic architecture of the drive-in itself will be incalculable.

        Dearfolk,
They should move the goldurned highway over far enough to save this place. We'll never see the likes of it again.

I wanted to make it to the Wheel Inn before they close and had my chance this weekend. Yesterday, I drove over to Sedalia, MO from visiting friends in Jefferson City. I loved the Guberburger! But that shouldn't come as a surprise, since I enjoy peanut butter so much. It sounds a bit strange, but it worked perfectly on the burger. I also really enjoyed Bruce & Sue's recommendation of a limeade. What I didn't like were the fries....I wish I had gotten the onion rings instead.

Apparently, I am not the only one making the pilgrimage before they close. There were two other groups in there at the same time who wanted to visit before they shut down for good.

If you are anywhere in the area before Labor Day, don't pass up a chance to go!
