Looking for florida BBQ

I'll be in the Hollywood and fort Lauderdale area in Mid-March. I've tried Tom Jenkins and love it, but would love to know if there are other great places around there. I want the real thing - I've driven through the Carolina's and sampled Lexington, Shealy's, Wilbur's, Smiley's, and a bunch of others - so no chian's unless they are spectacular.

If you want to try a different kind of barbecue, go to Ernie's BBQ...it's on U.S. 1 (Federal Hwy.), just south of NE 17th St. Causeway, north of the airport. Their pork sandwich is superb...served on sweet Bimini bread with a thin sauce loaded with chopped onions...UMMM!! You also must have the conch chowder, sprinkled with sherry.

If you're willing to drive about a half hour - head down toward the everglades, just west of the FL Turnpike in Miami. It's roadfood at it's finist. The place lookes like a red barn type building with little huts/picnic tables outside to eat. The BBQ is different, never really had anything like it or at least nothing I can compare it to - it's really good! They've also got fried catfish, froglegs, burgers and some other things as well. The froglegs are also very good. I'm actually going to be in the Ft. Laud/Hollywood/Miami area from 3/9-3/13 and plan on hitting this place while I'm there. I've been to Tom Jenkins and liked it there too. Also if you have time, try Tarks on Rt 1 in Hollywood, a couple miles north of Young Circle. Great seafood: clams, mahi sandwiches, shrimp, oysters, wings - a definite roadfood place. Also Le Tub in Hollywood has the best Key Lime Pie I've ever had - I've been to Key west too. Usually people rave about their burgers - never had one but the mahi sandwich there is very good as well. Here's a link for the "Pit BBQ" http://www.fodors.com/miniguides/mgresults.cfm?destination=everglades@217&cur_section=din&property_id=177580

Near Hollywood is the Mess 'o Round in Hallandale Beach. I think only us locals know about it. Go early because when they run out, they close up until the next day. Take 95 to Pembroke Road East, Follow the signs that are on the bus stand benches.

Toms is the place that used to be Blue Front on PB Lakes Blvd. Now all they do is make the sauces out of a warehouse on 25th street. We use their wing sauce on the wings that we do @ SouperChix in Charlotte, NC.

I lived in Florida on 2 occasions for a total of 16 yrs. I was constantly disappointed by the quality of the so called " BBQ." I would not eat BBQ in FL. The only place that kind of does it right is Shorty's in Miami. It has been there for about 60 yrs but can be inconsistent. Skip the BBQ and eat some of the fresh seafood or quality Miami area Cuban street food.
