You should visit their museum at Athen, TN. You also get a huge bargain with a huge scoop of ice cream of your choice for a buck. A real good stop and I have stopped there several times off I-75 Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

We love the little Gift Shop and Ice Cream Parlor at the Mayfield dairy. Neat, clean, and very well decorated. A great place to enjoy that special Ice Cream, be it winter or summer!!

My business travels took me to Athens a couple summers ago. Read the results at www.dairyfield.com -- choose October 2004 from the drop-down menu under the image of the current issue. It was a challenge to shoot a photo of the management team, each holding an ice cream cone, under the hot summer sun, ice cream dripping down their sleeves ... Scottie Mayfield is a fine gentleman, and Mayfield's "Flavor Decision '06" -- to choose a permanent new flavor from the year's limited edition selections -- was a fantastic marketing campaign.

As much as I love ice cream, I have never been there. I will be driving to Nashville for the Roadfood bus tour. This sounds like a great place to stop on the way.

BBuster, You can get Mayfields in 'Store boxes' at many convenience and grocery stores in Tenn. The source is in Athens TN near exit 62 od I-75, South of Knoxville. It will be a bit of a side trip for you to stop there on the way to Nashville, but if you enjoy ice cream in very pleasant surroundings, I recommend making time for that stop. Otherwise get a half gallon or two and a spoon and enjoy it anywhere!!!

Mr. Mayor- Thanks for the tip. I looked it up on the map and it looks real close to Dayton, TN, a place I have always wanted to visit. I read a book on the Scopes Monkey Trial in high school and have always wanted to see where it took place. I think checking out the local museum and a tour of Mayfield's would be a great way to spend a day. Even though I have never tried it, I have heard from others just how good the ice cream is.

The Strawberry festival is in Dayton about the time of the Nashville trip. Dayton, TN is about 25 miles from Athens. Strawberries are a big deal in Dayton. They are not like the huge California berries but small and very sweet varities. The last time I was there, I bought them straight out of the field and just picked. They had several hundred guys picking them Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

My family is from near Dayton, Spring City actually, and those small sweet strawberries are the best! My great uncle had a strawberry patch and my cousins and I used to sit in the dirt eating them right off the plants when we were little. My great aunt kept a deep freezer on the back porch filled with Mayfield, and Mayfield only, ice creams and popsicles. I still love to get a Mayfield Brown Cow because it makes me think of summer days at their house and running across the road and jumping off the dock into Watts Barr lake.
