I get so vexed when people tell me "Well, nobody would support a veggie fast food place" They are wrong ! We need veggie fast food places. Maybe we would have healthier people because they would have healthier choices other than salt, fat, grease, white sugar and white bread, and dead flesh. Tee hee.

Those are the same people that claim that a veg restaurant will not do well. What needs to really happen is more veg options at fast food places.

We have a few vegetarian restaurants in Austin; two that come to mind are Mother's and West Lynn Cafe (I think they're owned by the same people, though).

Although not a vegetarian myself, I love to eat at these places because they care so much about the quality of the food.

We also have a great organic farm in south Austin, Boggy Creek Farm, that sells fresh-picked produce every Wednesday and Saturday. The owners are both vegetarians, but the farm sells organic meats, cheeses, and eggs, also (produced by other area farms). I go there often on Saturdays to stock up.

I don't know of any "fast food" veggie places, though. I think it would be a good idea, but since I'm a "market-driven" guy, it seems that someone would have done it if it's a self-sustaining concept.

      It would be nice, however.

I know of a number of Vegan coffee shops here in Seattle, but no fast food places.

Sorry, I guess that I should have clarified, those coffee shops also serve lunch type items, and pastries

Burger King has a new veggie burger - it's not great, but it's not bad...

Also, the updated salads at McD's are fairly good.

The best vegan food I have ever had is a fresh picked tomato out of the house garden. Sometimes I cheat and take a salt and peper shaker with me. A fresh green or red pepper or a cuke are not far behind.

I was thinking of Noodles & Co., Tokyo Joes, Chins and Qdoba--all of which have good vegetarian options and are "upscale fast food". But I've never seen any of them outside of trendier areas or college towns. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if people WOULD eat healthier if they had healthier options, especially when I see what they put in their shopping carts at the supermarket when they DO have a choice...

I have to aggree with Corey. Most people don't care what they eat. However it is nice that there are starting to be options. Buger King's BK Veggie. I know that within the Vegan community there has been a push to eat it, even if there is a small trace of egg in the bun and very few of us like fast food, so that the product will succeed. The thought is that if it does more companies with follow suit.

Veggie Fast Food is somewhat of an oxymoron. People don't go to these places for healthful items. The only "healthy" fast food places that started quickly died a fast, healthy death (D'Lites, comes to mind). Vinelady and Corey L are right, few people put 100% healthy, vegan items in their shopping carts unless you go to a healthfood coop, but then you get assaulted by the health-food police and the endless touters of samples of tofu candy and jicama punch. Blecch! Give me a good cheeseburger and fries (and not fast food, either). If I want my veggies, I know where to find them.

All I would like is the option to grab something fast if I am doing one of the many drives I do up and down I-5 (Oregon, Washington, and BC). On those trips I usually don't have the option to choose a long meal. Now a days, I pack alot of snacks. :(

Stopping at a roadside stand for fresh green beans and apples that I can eat while I continue my drive is my idea of veggie fast food.

If you're really desperate, Subway offers a veggie pattie sub which is suspiciously similar in taste and texture to a Gardenburger.

Many pizza places in my area offer sauteed veggie sandwiches, an alternative to fatty cheesesteaks, etc., sometimes served with tomato sauce, sometimes not. They will work in a pinch too.
