Two great books by Jane and Michael Stern... Fri, 04/20/07 1:43 PM (permalink)
I work in a bookstore in NYC and have been off for a couple of weeks. Imagine my delight upon my return when I found "Two For The Road" in paperback AND the new "Roadfood Sandwiches" book on the shelves! I love the Sandwiches book and I can't wait to try some of the recipes at home. They really covered the U.S. and every region with this. Thanks!

    billyboy-
Thanks for letting me know that "Roadfood Sandwiches" has been released. I read it wasn't going to be available until May 12th. I called my local Barnes & Noble, but they were already out of it. Luckily, the Border's just a little further down the road had one and has it on hold for me. I am going to pick it up tonight!

By the way, the guy I spoke to a Border's told me there is a sandwich on the cover of the book that would make Dagwood Bumpstead proud!

We'll have a dozen copies of Roadfood Sandwiches as prizes for whatever cockamamie contest we come up with on the Nashville tours; and of course if anyone wants to bring their own copies along (or copies of any other of our books), we'll be happy to sign them.

Michael, is that an actual Central Grocery muffuletta on the cover? Looks fantastic!

Michael, there is an assumption that there will be free copies signed for your overworked, highly paid moderators.

Looking forward to meeting you, Jane and Stephen in Nashville.

                      LL -

It was posted in another thread that the price of photos in the book would have driven the cost of the book much higher, but if you would like to see the photos back to lobby the publisher.

As "a picture says a thousand words", It have been worth the extra cost, I would never again buy something like that without a picture!

Actually, I cannot see the need for pictures in a travel/roadfood book. Food photos are sometimes so phony.........who needs them? I would rather spend the money on what this book is really all about.

I too, love to see pictures and find them inspiring. They tantilize me, more than words can ever say. They catch my eye, and then I read the words/recipes that go with them to see if I want to try them.

While I have many cookbooks on the my shelves, in my den, few are those with no pictures.

                                Keep the pictures coming!!

I just ordered a copy from Amazon.com.....had it shipped to my Uncle in Port Huron, MI who is expecting to go to Ann Arbor this Saturday for the Stern's Symposium on American Culinary History. After he gets it signed, I'm sure he'll promptly send it back to his niece!

Not to belabor a point, but I have a vast collection of wonderful cookbooks and very few have photos in them. I am talking Julia Child, Joy of Cooking, Edna Lewis, Mark Bittman and so many others. In fact, I would have to say that out of the 3000 plus cookbooks that I own, I would venture to guess that less than 10 percent of them have food phots. Nevertheless, I have been able to come up with wonderful meals.

Lucky me, I was able to get both books out of my local library. I've bought every "Roadfood" book the Sterns have put out, but these two books seemed like they weren't "keepers", just "readers", so I'm glad my library had them.

OK, "Two for the Road" was a little disappointing, because I was hoping for more of a tell-all real story of thier ups and downs. But this was mostly about the ups. But I still read with great interest the story of how they started out and got going. As the saying goes: Do what you love to do and try to find a way to earn a living at it. They sure have!

I didn't miss pictures in The Sandwich book, in fact, if you want to see pictures, most of the places are on this Website, with pictures. Which means the book didn't add much new for fans of the Sterns and this website. I did get a couple of good recipes I will try at home. What I did find annoying was the lack of addresses for the places. I had to go to the web for that info (which is how I began to realize that this book covered ground already covered by the other Roadfood books, a lot of the Google hits led to the this webbite).

                                            Just my 2 cents. --Ken
