Colombian??? Sat, 04/21/07 6:25 AM (permalink)
I just went to my first Colombian restaurant. Reminded me of a cross between Mexican and Cuban more than other Central American cuisines.

Nice braised meats, sausages, Yuca, Plantains, and a trippy dessert called "milk skin".

Has anyone else tried it? Any experts out there with knowledge to share???

You know when you go to the Indian deli, they have those little sqaures of sweets made out of some kind of evaporated milk? It was like that, only a little softer, like it wanted to be a custard, with bits of coconut. It left a powdery film of fat on my tongue that seemed familiar but I couldn;t place. The dominant flavor was evaporated milk and coconut. Not dulce de leche, which accompanied it.

        It sounds good.

P.S. I've never been to an Indian deli but would jump at the chance if I knew where a good one was here in the So Cal area. (blatant hint)

Colombians make delicious empanadas, too. If you ever wanted to have more food than you could possibly eat on one platter, you should order a bandeja paisa, which generally comes with steak, pork crackings (chicharron), eggs, fries, avocado, and I think I'm missing something else!
Elise, did you go to Queens? I think that borough has the highest concentration of Colombians outside of Colombia. It also has fantastic Colombian restaurants.

                Did you say empanadas???

Actually, I will be going to NY for the first time this Fall. I have never had Colombian food before last week. There are a lot of El Salvadorean places here, and some Brazilian, but in general central and south america are under-represented in the restaurants around here.

                  Great picture, Elise!
There used to be a wonderful empanada place off Pearl Street Mall in Boulder, CO. Does anyone know if it's still there? It was just a walk up window sort of place with 6 or 7 different empanadas and drinks. It was very good and really inexpensive.

Ooops, sorry Elise, I actually mixed you up with another poster (I was thinking of Ellen who lives in New Jersey). Forgot I gave you some recs regarding Italian restaurants in New York in another thread!

I remember the few years I spent in the Bay Area of California. Salvadoran food, no problem; Mexican, all over the place; one or two Brazilian places, and that was pretty much it for South America and Latin America. I missed the easy access to good Hispanic Caribbean places (Dominican, Puerto Rican, Cuban) that you get in New York, pretty much all over.

Again, the Colombian community is particularly strong in the borough of Queens. Their restaurants are good, too, and very inexpensive.

the first (and last time) I ate columbian food was in London of all places! Right there in all these buildings was a family of Columbians who lived on top of their restaurant...and I mean a WHOLE family including an 80something year old grandpa! Unfortuneately we don't have any kind of S. American or Central American restaurants in San Antonio. If there are, and I'm sure they're around here somewhere, I've never heard of them. We're up to our armpits in mexican restaurants!

Friday I bought some fresh Columbian chorizo at Las Camelias 44-14 Greenpoint Ave. in Queens. Good sausages, interesting spicing. They were a big hit at the barbecue I attended Saturday. Nice Columbian bakery next door which I'll be checking out soon.

There's a rundown motel (Kings Inn, for you Madisonians) just down the street from my workplace and its restaurant has sat empty for most of the past 15 years or so. The other day I noticed a sign in the window saying that a Colombian restaurant is coming soon, but the food's going to have to be really good in order to overcome its bad location. The hotel occasionally houses transients and other unfortunates for the county and last summer there was a murder there, and I don't think many people are going to want to go there for dinner. Maybe people that work at the surrounding businesses (it's in an industrial park) will form a good lunch crowd, but outside of the local Colombian community that might be it.

I wish the restaurant proprietors well but it's tough to predict a bright future for them...

Just to prove the deleterious effects of the "kind herb" I consumed long ago, I almost posted the same comment I did 14 months ago!
