One of the more interesting aspects of New Haven is when you ask a local where to find the best pizza in town. Surprisingly, I will get a reply of Modern Appizza as the place to go. http://www.roadfood.com/Reviews/Overview.aspx?RefID=526
The regional weekly paper, The New Haven Advocate, in their yearly 'Best of' poll once again awarded the first prize to Modern, based on the votes of the readers responses.
Pepe's came in second and the Bar/Bru Room came in third. I have heard many good things about Bar. They have won awards for Best Beer selection, Best Brew Pub, Best Singles Bar (! This is something that the other two cannot claim), and yes, they serve their thin crusted and burnt edged pie on a sheet pan.
There are other Roadfood restaurants that made the list. If you want to see the winners here is the address:
One of the reasons why I am posting this is that I think that there are plenty of places to go if there was a Roadfood tour of lower western Connecticut. Based on what has been reviewed here and the winners from the weekly, there are plenty of places to go to and plenty more that you wish you could try.
