New Haven Pizza, The Best

When it comes to Pizza (abeetz) you can't go wrong in New Haven, CT. These are my preferences (very best to better than any other pizza).
Pepe's, Grand, Zuppardi's (West Haven), Sally's, Tolli's (East Haven), Modern, Only the Best (West haven), Depalmas (East Haven), Exception: I haven't tasted The Bar pizza yet but I hear it could make 2nd or 3rd in my taste prefenece.

I've heard about all the great pizza joints in New Haven, but, as I live in Dallas, I don't have the opportunity to get to New Haven.
If I did, I would be happy to try ALL the places you mentioned. Especially, Pepe's.

Years ago I was in New Haven and actually wound up eating a great pizza at a place that was I believe in West Haven. It was an Italian restaurant, too and the owner had decorations and articles posted about his home region of Ischia. The pizza was awesome. any idea what the name of the place was?

Could it have been App's?

Doesn't sound familiar, but then it's been at least 6 years. I do remember it being as good as Pepe's and much easier to get into.

Well, App's is on Captain Thomas Boulevard now, and it's more of a restaurant, but they do have -- or they used to have -- apizza.

This is Great, it looks like most of you have tasted and appreciate the New Haven Area pies. I'm also thinking that it may be App's. They have a good pie.

Born and reared in New Haven.

New Haven IS the center of the world for pizza as far as I am concerned.

hbgman another really good place in East Haven (specifically Foxon) is John and Maria's on Rt. 80.

Making our yearly pilgrimage to the cape June 15th, and will be stopping in New Haven on the way up. We've tried to get the clam pie at Pepe's twice, but they were sold out. Hoping to get one this time, if not we're thinking of trying another pizza establishment. Thanks for the list! Sue

I am not a big pizza guy, but I can tell you the the best I have ever had is in New Haven. I have been to only Sally's and Pepe's and they are both as good as they say.

Modern is my favorite. But then I didn't care for the white clam pie at Pepe's, so my taste may differ other New Haven fans. I'm still an old Pepperoni and/or sausage with extra cheese pizza guy. The coal fired ovens and thin crust make the New Haven pies the best.

Modern is my favorite in New Haven, but I would have to travel back Rome, Naples, or Turkey (yes, Turkey!) to eat the best in the world.

One of the more interesting aspects of New Haven is when you ask a local where to find the best pizza in town. Surprisingly, I will get a reply of Modern Appizza as the place to go.

The regional weekly paper, The New Haven Advocate, in their yearly 'Best of' poll once again awarded the first prize to Modern, based on the votes of the readers responses.
Pepe's came in second and the Bar/Bru Room came in third. I have heard many good things about Bar. They have won awards for Best Beer selection, Best Brew Pub, Best Singles Bar ( This is something that the other two cannot claim !), and yes, they serve their thin crusted and burnt edged pie on a sheet pan. My understanding is that their pizza is made by people who worked at Pepe's or Sally's. I have been to the pizza triumverate that has made this town famous plus Pepe's sister store in Fairfield.

hbgman lists many places that I have not tried, and this piques my curiosity. I am in West Haven frequently enough to check 'em out. Do any of these stores sell slices?

One of the reasons why I am posting this is that I think that there are plenty of places to go if there was a Roadfood tour of lower western Connecticut. We could eat the best pizza, hot dogs, belly clams and lobster rolls, and not have to go much further than a 50 mile radius at best. Based on what has been reviewed here and the winners from the weekly, there are plenty of places to go to and plenty more that you wish you could try.
