Better get a party-sized tank of propane.

I'd suggest just using natural gas, but we all know how high utility costs are in SoCal.

If this has been posted, forgive me.
The "Chinese Chalk" is called "Miraculous Insecticide Chalk". It comes in a 4 inch by 1 inch small orang black and yellow box. I pick it up from flea markets and asian shops but that is the only place I have found it. It works great. Ants will not cross the chalk and it last for a few weeks.

          WARNING!!
I googled (isn't that a word now?) the chalk and came up with a bunch of hits, this one being maybe the scariest. Check it before you get involved!

OK, I already had the miraculous chalk at the doorways. I had diatomaceous earth spread under the house and all around the perimeter of the house. I cleaned the counters with vinegar. I had Dr. Bronner's soap in a spray bottle and orange cleaner to spray them. I caulked every nook and cranny in the walls facing outside and the kitchen. Then the night I posted this, they were streaming out of the dishwasher.

Weirdly enough, after the post, in the last week, they have totally disappeared. I was wondering if one of you put a mojo on them or something. Maybe it's a combo of everything I did. Maybe it's the weather. Some people have made noises that this just happens every year.

I had already made an appointment for this coming Sat for the exterminator to come, so I'm still going to keep that. I'd hate to tell him forget it, then have them show up again.

OK, there's lots of talk ABOUT ant chalk, but where does one find it. The ants seem to really like my cats' food. They can find it no matter where I put it in the house.

              Thanks!

Head for Chinatown or the swap meet to find ant chalk. But after reading about it causing seizures, I'm not so sure you should put it anywhere the cat might step in it. I have heard ants won't cross any chalk, so you can try sidewalk chalk first.

Update: the night before the exterminator came, they showed up again. This time he also put some kind of aerosol spray into the electrical outlets. He said it would be dissipated in 4 hours, but my boyfriendand I both got dizzy, nauseous and headach-y upon returning after 5 hours. We packed up the cat and spent the night at my mom's. I haven't seen an ant since.

Here's an article the LA Times ran today on ant chalk.

Thanks for the article. Interesting quotes..."I used to spend hours on my knees by the fridge killing the ants one by one with my finger" ??? Wow. You know, my boyfriend used to work for an exterminator, and they would occasionally show up on calls where there were no bugs to be found. A crazed, hopped-up customer would point at a pattern in the wallpaper and insist, "Can't you see them??? They're RIGHT...THERE!!!"

May be a bit tricky for a house but I know for a boat that borax and Tabasco sauce work just fine. Borax in the boat will take care of all kind of varmits. Tabasco poured on the dock lines will keep the critters from coming aboard. I learned the Tabasco trick in Bermuda a few years ago and it works quite well.
