What a nice article! That is rather interesting they they now serve the corn bread salad at their restaurant. Too bad I missed it while at Henpeck Market. Thanks for posting the link.

Nice write-up, though I really wish that Sylvan Park weren't getting slammed for one of the franchised outposts rather than the original, which is quite a different place altogether...

I was wondering about that. The place I go, on Murphy, couldn't possibly accommodate a busload of people.

Poverty Pete & pogophiles- I was curious as to why a place with such a great reputation like the original Sylvan Park has a second location with so obviously inferior food. Is it the same owners?

Not certain, but they've been doing this for years. The original on Murphy Road is tiny and wonderful. All the other incarnations that I've tried (including locations on Nolensville Road, on Franklin Road, in Green Hills and even in LaVergne) have been wildly inconsistent. The one in Green Hills was actually pretty good for a while, but I suspect the traffic was not enough to make up for such a high rent location. All the others ranged from mediocre to dreadful. I suspect that the owner just sells the rights to use the name every so often for the extra dollars, rather than trying to make a go of it with additional locations. The place on Murphy road is very small but also turns over a lot of tables in the course of a day. Most folks going there either live in the neighborhood or have been going there for years (or both in many cases) and so aren't bothered by the other locations. They know better than to go to them. And I don't recall ever seeing a reference to any other location in the original. Nothing on the menus, no signage, nothing.

By the way, most of these 2nd locations don't last very long. The locations in Green Hills, LaVergne and Nolensville Road no longer exist...

pogophiles- I am sure they get paid handsomely for letting others use the Sylvan Park name, but this sure doesn't seem like good business. What is more important than your name and reputation? But, I guess if the original location is always busy, and it sure was on my visit, no big deal.

Too bad I missed it while at Henpeck Market it was delicious !! I had a burger, a pimento cheese sandwich, and the cornbread salad. Believe it or not, I held off eating that cornbread salad till I was back in NJ a few days later. (cause I was stuffed) Luckily, it held up nicely for a "before work" breakfast..

I have read somewhere that the Sylvan Park on Franklin Road is the same owners but others are right - they have tried other various locations and they tend to all close. The last time I was at the original Sylvan Park several months ago I did not think it was as good as in the past. A lot really has to do with the cooks too I think. Unless they have the 'touch' - recipes won't do a thing for you. Guys - we still need to meet at Ron's - I was there Thursday by myself for lunch since I couldn't find anyone that hadn't already eaten when I got free for lunch. work email is melissa_linkinhokerATdellDOTcom - email me around lunch one day and I'll meet you and make sure they take real good care of you.
