Hedgehog Dessert

Have you guys ever heard of this? In doing a tour of Bath, NC this weekend I was told that this was a special dessert back in the 1700's.

my sister makes a porcupine desert, supposedly mexican. we all call it the hedgehog (which annoys her greatly) it consists of of ladyfingers piled on top of each other in an oval shape, covered with a kahlua cream, and then has slivered almonds stuck in for quills. maybe this is similar? personally i'd rather eat a hedgehog than a porcupine

The Hedgehog cake has long been a favorite in our household. My wife used to make it for the kids back in Germany, and even found a form pan for it. The cake is baked and then sliced into 3rds, filling each layer with a creme cheese based frosting, then topping it with chocolate frosting and using almond slivers for the quills. These are not unusual in Germany, and she has carried on the tradition here in the states. Sorry for the quality of the pics...pictures of pictures, and they weren't good to begin with, but you get the idea. DD
