Roadfood Switzerland - part 1 Sat, 08/11/07 2:56 PM (permalink)
Hi all-

The hubby and I recently got back from 2 weeks in Switzerland. I know this site is dedicated to roadfood in America, but thought it would be interesting to post an American roadfooder's perspective on Swiss roadfood.

We stayed with our friend Ruedi and his wife Franziska in Pfaffikan, on Lake Zurich. We met Ruedi last summer when he was staying in our hometown of New Glarus, Wisconsin and working as a chef at the New Glarus Hotel. We found a Harley Davidson motorcycle for him to ride while he was here, and he promised if we would come to Switzerland he would get a bike for us and we would ride in the Alps. So that's what we did.

Me, Loyd, and Ruedi at the Hofe near his house in Pfaffikan, Schwyz, Switzerland

Rest stop on the Klausen Pass in the Alps

Lunch in "Old" Glarus at the Gasthof Baren. This is Loyd's pork tenderloin.

There are hotel/restaurants like this everywhere in Switzerland

William Tell statue in Altdorf. New Glarus will be celebrating William Tell Fest over Labor Day weekend. Now I see where it all started.

The Alps are truly amazing. The pictures don't do it justice. And I can't think of a better way to see them than by motorcycle.

Peti's is the Swiss version of a biker bar. It happened to be right down the street from Ruedi and Franziska's apartment, so we found ourselves there several evenings. After a long day of riding it was nice to relax on their patio with a beer.

Peti's also has great food! This is the Grillteller, the biggest dinner on the menu. It consists of half a veal brat, half a Shublig sausage, a pork chop, veal chop, pommes frites, and a mixed salad.

the wurstkasesalat at Peti's - a cheese and sausage salad. Hey, it's still a salad so that makes it healthy, right?

Another lunch stop in the southern canton of Valais. Here the waitress spoke French. Ruedi's wife had to translate to Swiss-German, then Ruedi translated to English for us. All these languages are so confusing!

I've had veal sausage and roesti many times in and around New Glarus. This is the real deal, slightly different and superb.

A beverage stop near Gstaad. We were just drinking soft drinks -they serve everything in a fancy glass.

A rare treat for most American tourists - we were treated to a barbecue at the vacation home of Franziska's sister's family. The small chalet was located in the seemingly ancient village of Finan, at the top of an alp in Valais.

A view of some of the old buildings in Finan.

I seem to be having trouble with my photo hosting site. I'll hopefully post more photos from our trip when I can get it working again. Until then I hope you enjoy the report so far!

Great pics! Now I recognize you. We were in Toffler's July 30 in the late afternoon. Had we only known. I posted some of your menu here.

Lovely pictures and trip report! I lived in Europe for 7 years.......first time to the Alps was in a Deux Cheveaux, second time in a Renault 5, after that it was in a Citroen CX Prestige. I would love to go the Alps on a bike. The food is wonderful, as is the scenery!

Nice report, I love driving through the alps.

There are so many neat places to pull off and visit. Most of the locals are very friendly, and willing to help you find a place to eat or invite you to eat with them.

I was last there in 2002. It is some of the most remarkable scenery anywhere in the world.

Thanks everyone for your feedback. Looking back at the photos it's almost hard for me to believe we were actually there. Being of Swiss descent myself, it was always my dream to go to Switzerland, and it definitely did not disappoint! And seeing it on a motorcycle is the only way to go - the trip of a lifetime.

I think I have all my photos hosted now, but when I tried to post a "part 2", my computer locked up before I got it posted.

Hopefully I'll have time to try again this weekend. Stay tuned!
