Wierd uses of bread... Fri, 08/31/07 10:44 PM (permalink)
This is not - exactly - a thought about sandwiches, just a "part" of sandwiches, but I for some reason remember "off-label" uses of bread, mostly practiced by my old school grandmother:

1. Knead up a piece for an eraser
2. Combine with milk and put on skin to draw out a pimple or boil
3. Eat plain when you have something (small) stuck in your throat

Does anyone knw these ideas - or other ones?

If you have to solder copper pipe and water keeps dripping, you can take some Wonder bread or other nasty white bread, wad it up and shove it into the pipe. After you solder the new fittings in and turn the water back on the bread gets blown out of the pipe.

It will help stop the bleeding when you slice a finger to the bone while cutting smoked sausage with a freshly sharpened knife!
        Or so I've heard.
(kind of like a meat putty, filler, spackle, glue all-in-one)

The ER folks thought it was pretty interesting (or so I understand).

I know the old adage about the dull blade being more dangerous than the sharp but....

....that's just not been my experience.

I buy old cheap bread to feed the ducks and geese at my dock. They could care less about the age of the bread.

I've seen it used to line the bottom of a roasting pan when making meat loaf and such. Soaks up the grease pretty well.

I eat a piece to calm the burning in my mouth when I've eaten something that's too spicy. It soaks up the oils in the peppers.

Mom my does the same thing Paul, she goes to the bakery thrift store and picks up 6 for a buck, she calls it "Duck Bread"

She found a half of a loaf tucked under her seat the use by date was 4 months ago.

                The scary thing....... NO MOLD!!!

I save little bread heels in my freezer, then throw one in the cookie jar when I bake fresh cookies and they have started to get a bit hard. The bread will soften them up to close to fresh baked.

Breakfast. I worked at an Italian restaurant that had a great round loaf that was served warm, in thick slices at dinner. When we'd come in the next morning to do the breakfast, or sometimes even the lunch, shift, we'd get last night's bread, cut it up into inch or so squares, add milk and eat it like you would cereal.

Doesn't sound all that good, does it? It was wonderful. While the bread served hot and fresh wasn't sweet, there was a certain sweetness when eating it with milk. The man we learned it from is from Italy. I think that this was a typical breakfast for poor Italians when he was a young kid (right after WWII).

My dad was a (house) painter & paperhanger back before vinyl coated wallpaper and he would use a wad of white bread to clean an area of wallpaper when he ran out of the product that was manufactured to do so (which was similar to Play-doh).

An old way to put the yeast into the must during winemaking is to make a piece of toast and put the yeast on that, then float it in the liquid.

Bread heels from good bread like sourdough are one of lifes great little pleasures ... I could never sacrifice one to the cookie jar though.
I remember one episode of The Honeymooners where, to show Alice how angry he was, Ralph took the heel of the bread, showed it to her, and threw it out the window. A rash moment indeed.

As far as bread used to freshen cookies, that's an interesting ideaa. Cabbage leaves have been used for the same purpose ... uh well, to re-humidify cigars at least ... ok, not quite the same.

My Pawpaw would get stale bread from Mrs. Bairds bakery and feed it to the catfish he raised. They would come to the top of the water before the first slice hit the pond. He said it made them taste better. I think he was right. I have yet to have catfish as good as his.

Frankly, it's not very good for the ducks!

I disagree. I have been feeding my mallards and wood ducks bread for years. Their numbers has increased dramatically. I use to have just a few and now I have 40-50 every day. They look healthy to me.

My deck is only about 25 feet from the Tennesse river and my buddies are there every morning and every evening wondering where the foreign aide is coming from?

When we'd come in the next morning to do the breakfast, or sometimes even the lunch, shift, we'd get last night's bread, cut it up into inch or so squares, add milk and eat it like you would cereal.

Doesn't sound all that good, does it? It was wonderful. While the bread served hot and fresh wasn't sweet, there was a certain sweetness when eating it with milk. The man we learned it from is from Italy. I think that this was a typical breakfast for poor Italians when he was a young kid (right after WWII).

Your comment about the bread and milk rung a bell. Does anyone remember the movie Il Postino? (The postman.) There's a scene where the main character's father is sitting in his kitchen eating dinner...they were dirt poor. Dinner consisted of old bread torn up and dropped into milk. Funny how that scene came to mind after I read your comment.
