Water Ice Flavor Poll - vote for your favorite

My vote would have to be for coconut from Sundaes in Berlin, NJ. This place has lines you wouldn't believe, including at their drive-thru window, so they must be doing something incredibly right

Lemon-lime with little bits of rind. Seasonal favorite is fresh peach water ice, which we made this weekend.

Yes, sometimes I'll get a gelato. I like John's and Pop's in South Philly and Overbrook Water Ice in Manayunk. There's a Pop's near me in Havertown. Rita's are everywhere it seems and they're fine-I just prefer the others. quote:Originally posted by NancyPeter Cheesewit, do you ever have a gelato or radio ball instead of straight up water ice

Yes, it's similar to a sno-cone except there isn't syrup poured over crushed ice. The flavor is throughout. The flavoring syrup is added to the ice in a large rotating freezer. It is what we have in Philadelphia.

Lone Star, it's SO much better than a sno-cone. There are tons of flavors available, and if you find a good water ice stand, it's almost as delicious as ice cream

Lemon and a sweet flavor in the same cup. Like lemon/cherry or lemon/peach or my favorite, lemon/mango. Yum.

I usually go for lemon, sweet and tart with bits of rind, which is boring I guess but on a hot day boy is that refreshing (but if I'm feeling wild, maybe root beer )! And as far as describing Water Ice (or Italian Ice--what I always heard it called as a kid), the texture is much finer than a snow cone or even shaved ice. I think it is similar to very fine snow, and the flavor can be intense. The fruit flavors often have bits of fresh fruit mixed in.

I love Watermelon Water Ice from "Buddy's" in Norristown, PA. I'm not a big fan of Rita's either. I have a friend who gets half watermelon half chocolate from Buddy's. I can't imagine it tasting good but he swears its awesome. I'm not that adventurous.

I'm from Connecticut and now living in Virginia where they know NOTHING of good italian treats such as italian water ice. Back home in Conneticut though, we'd go to Franklin Ave. in Hartford to Modern Pastry and have them pack a container to take back to the house plus pick up a cup of almond ice to eat then and there as you can't possibly wait to get to house to get your fix! I swear there i absolutely nothing more refreshing in the summer humidity than a cup of almond ice!

Years ago, when I lived in HI, I used to get Matsumoto's Shave Ice in 'rainbow' flavor with vanilla ice cream at the bottom of the cone. Simply delish!
