Help, Can't View Pictures Any More
Tue, 10/2/07 11:22 AM
( permalink)
I have noticed that in the last few day when I open a topic that has pictures I can't view the pictures. I have been able to do this before without any problems. If I open up a topic that is over a week old the pictures appear, but the newer topics the pictures don't appear. Is there anything I need to do to be able to view them?

Have you made any security or firewall changes on your computer?

Try a different browser and see if problem persists.

If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer try Netscape or Firefox or vise versa ...

Still can't view pictures. I opened up a topic in "Trip Report" and a topic that was first posted on 9/24 I can view the pictures, but one that was first posted on 9/26 and beyond I can't view the pictures. I am so looking forward to be able to do this as there are a few new topics with a lot of pictures posted. Can any one help me on this?

Is there anything I need to do to be able to view them? Has anyone downloaded anything recently? Has the site become really slow lately? Are you timing out when you try to change pages? Do you get a little red x in the pic box. Try right clicking on the x and then choose "show picture".

Hi all, As susanll mentioned, it may well be a firewall issue. Where I work, our firewall prohibits access to flickr, photobucket, personal blogs, etc., so links to photos at those sites will be blocked, while photos uploaded directly to Roadfood are viewable. Me? I check for new trip reports, and if I can't see the pictures, I check 'em out at home, between Fantasy Football roster adjustments (also blocked by my employer...:-)). -SWOG

Hi Sassy, Could you tell us if this is a work computer or your own computer? If it is your own computer, it would help if you told us what kind it is, how much memory is in there, the operating system you are using, and what version of browser you are using (Help>About will usually give you a box that tells you this.) Someone with a similar configuration may be able to tell you how they are getting to work on their machine. I took a look at the entries on the current index page. People have their photos hosted in one of three places: 1) Roadfood 2) Imageshack 3) Photobucket Are you having trouble with viewing pictures hosted on all sites, or just some sites?

David - During the day I use a work computer. May be this is why I cannot view the pictures now.

My office blocks pictures too now - so frustrating! lol Of course I probably shouldn't be looking at the pics while at work anyways, right? oh well, I just wait until I get home then look up trip reports to view pics.

While I am not having the same problem as the OP is having, I have often seen your above reccommendation, on other sites, to problems other posters (sometimes, myself) were having. How does one "use another browser"? For me, on my desktop, there is an icon for IE, which I click on. How does one get/find/use another browser. Sorry if I am really dumb on this??

Sassy: The consensus here seems to be that your firm has installed "blacklisting" software to reduce Internet charges. Unlike home users, commercial customers usually have meters on their account. To prove this hypothesis, try downloading these (clean) pictures. I got the URL's from the pictures in the trip reports; one from each major hoster: http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n289/billyboy71_2006/Picture492.jpg http://www.roadfood.com/insider/photos/3196.jpg http://img300.imageshack.us/img300/4545/img0788tl9.jpg The one from Roadfood should come up since you can access this site from work. If not, try to find a website related to your work that does not load pictures anymore, and turn in the problem to your IT folks. I remember talking with a IT guy once who told the story about the time they first installed blacklisting software. A lot of dummies called up and gave the websites that no longer worked for them. They were usually porno sites. You really can't call up and say "I can't get Roadfood.com to work for me." Also, some firms now disable Active-X controls on their employees' computers, or at least prompt for permission to run them. About other browsers, there are a few other software packages out there that can be used to surf the web, such as Netscape Navigator, Opera, and Firefox. If you put the names of these packages and the word browser, (e.g. Firefox browser) into Google you will come to sites where you can download them. However, I don't recommend doing this unless you have some sort of software support. I have seen no end of times when someone installed a software package on their computer and it never worked again. The problem with browsers is that they often change your defaults. People use alternative broswers because they have features that Explorer does not have, and also are more secure, or at least the criminals do not try to write software to hijack all the browser packages out there, just Microsoft's Explorer.

David, thanks so much for you help. I guess my work has "backlisted" pictures. Your info and knowledge was very helpful.

Glad to be of help. Also, it would not be a bad idea to check those websites you use as part of your job duties. Companies buy off-the-shelf blacklisting software; few make up their own. Sometimes it blacklists the websites of the subscriber's vendors and customers.
