Indian fry bread

Anybody here crave those? Seemingly simple, yet not that many places get it right. Hell, not that many places even serve it. Supposedly it's best made with Bluebird Mills flour from Cortez, CO (high-altitude wheat).

I would love to make it at home but refuse to deal with deep-fat frying. Has anybody PAN-FRIED the dough?

I have a mix someone sent me from ND. It's actually pretty good but I was a bit of a disaster at deep frying. Did not try pan, curious on that.

As I have said in several places on RF, my best breakfast EVER was "heuvos rancheros" on fry bread at the national park lodge at the Badlands in SD. Mmmmmmmmmm.

Coincidentally, Ceci, Amy & I have had the same meal at the same place in SD, and it was scrumptious. On that same trip in North Dakota, we happened upon a Native American powwow near the Peace Garden/Manitoba border, where we had an Indian taco on frybread...but it wasn't as good as other frybreads I had that trip. We went to a little diner in Interior, SD that had the best frybread we'd had; I told the very humble Native American cook that powwow story, and she just laughed!

I love the stuff. I've tried the mix in the blue box, Woodenknife I think it was called but it was messy and not the same. I like to make Navaho Tacos from fry bread. Alice Oatmans in Oatman Az used to have a really good one, but I was a bit dissapointed when I ate one a couple of weeks ago. I don't see why you could not pan fry them as long as they are not too thick.

It was good but it had also been a long time since I had fry bread. For some reason when I was in both ND and SD in 2006 I never managed to find any (mostly stayed with friends).
