Indian fry bread

Anybody here crave those? Seemingly simple, yet not that many places get it right. Hell, not that many places even serve it. Supposedly it's best made with Bluebird Mills flour from Cortez, CO (high-altitude wheat).
I would love to make it at home but refuse to deal with deep-fat frying. Has anybody PAN-FRIED the dough?
