    Keep the Presidents Day Weekend open...in Mobile, AL and the surrounding Gulf Coast area. We want to include stops at Dreamland and Brick Pit BBQ and Wintzells Oyeter House as well as some other places in the area.

    Hopefully we will be able to establish a hotel that is centrally located where everyone can be comfortable.

    Poverty Pete has told me about the oyster place many times. I have visited Dreamland in Mobile several times and I have always enjoyed their ribs and sauce.

    I'm hoping that the Nan-Sea restaurant will reopen by that time. Buffetbuster has been there before and liked it, although I took a look at the website for Jqdiva's Blue Gill Restaurant and that seems interesting too.

    I've been to Dreamland's Tuscaloosa location, and if the Mobile location is just as good, I'll probably abstain from
    on a permanant basis!

    We moved this to the Misc. Food Related(planning)Forum.

    In addition to the selected roadfood stops we hope to have a list of places that can be 'alternative stops', or 'other meals' to meet member's individual tastes or preferences.

    One side trip that several folks have asked about is a stop in Pensacola,FL at the Naval Aviation Museum. While it is out of Mobile about 50 miles, It is certainly worth a side-trip if you want to go. We are looking for a roadfood suggestion or two in Pensacola for those who do make that tour.

    Also, Don-Cajun King will be competing at the Gulf-Shores Gumbo Cook-off that weekend. His activity there may keep him from making the group dinners, but some folks may want to visit the competition and see all the activity at the cook-off. This too is within easy driving distance of Mobile. Don, Please give us the name and the location and schedule for that event when you can. Thanks.

    The Dates to set aside (any or all of these depending on your travel desires):
    Friday Feb. 15;
    Saturday Feb 16;
    Sunday Feb. 17;
    Monday Feb 18.

    We are looking at a dinner Saturday evening and an early afternoon dinner on Sunday. History has shown us that many folks use Friday and Sunday as travel days, so the main events will be Saturday and early Sunday. A dinner stop will be built in for Friday night and Sunday night with the understanding that flexibility will be the watchword for those folks flying in.

    Hotel space hasn't been selected yet, but we are working on a list of reasonably close-together places to post for folks. If you have a favorite in or near Mobile, post it and we will add it to the list. Criteria for lodging seems to be moderate price and a bit above the Motel-6 level of service.
    Thats it for now.

    The Gumbo cookoff is actually in Mexico Beach, FL. Which looking at the map is probably too far to come for gumbo. (211 miles from Mobile)

    However - 10th annual Mexico Beach Gumbo Cookoff will be held 2-16-08, @ sunset park in Mexico Beach.

    10:30 am Central Time until the Gumbo runs out 12:30 pm (ish)

    You are all more than welcome to come visit and partake of Gumbo, and I could reccomend some great places in the Panama City area, but again it is 211 miles away from Mobile.

    Oh... Sorry. Somehow I thought the cookoff is to be at Gulf-shores just east of Mobile. My geography, or my memory is faulty. We will scream cheers into the sunshine so you will know we are thinking of you!

    Perhaps if the Gumbo thing is on Sunday, I would probably make my way back to Knoxville VIA Panama City and then north. I could make the spot. If you could send us a map, perhaps we could make the stop.

    My plans for Mobile is to be there on Thursday evening, all day Friday, all day Saturday and depart Sunday morning.

    My father first took me to Wintzell's as a little tyke, so this trip sounds fabulous! Mr Chips mentioned choosing Austin over this, but I may have to do the opposite...it sounds so enticing.

I think that would be a great Saturday evening stop. Then the Oysters and Seafood on Sunday at Wintzells, probably the newer place near the airport, as it has a room we can use !

    Those of us in town Friday evening can do the Brick Pit to compare them to Dreamland the following day.

    The plan is beginning to take shape. We will be driving south on Wed. Feb. 13th. We want to stop in Dothan and then on to the beach Thursday. We plan to arrive in Mobile friday (Late Morning). No lodging yet,but remember we have to find a place that will accept pets.. Day tours or beach walks are in the 'forming plans' under discussion.

    Al,
    It seems most folks will be in town on Friday and that
    most of us might be leaving on Sunday, so perhaps we can consider doing Wintzell's on Friday Evening?

    Speak for yourself, Al! Jan, my brother, and I will be there, but if we scream cheers into the sunshine, we'll be screaming toward the east, which means it'll be morning. And I don't plan to be interested in screaming anything in the morning!

    But please be sure to let us know about any centralized motel.

    OK If we do Wintzell's Friday night... Brick Pit Saturday afternoon/evening and save Dreamland for Sunday (it is open Sunday 11 AM to 9 PM!) That should cover the menu pretty well and fit into the travel schedules of most of the group. That leaves breakfasts and/or Brunches (Rick) open for your own choices.

    I will contact Wintzells to see which store has room for us on Friday (Hoping the downtown location will work). They have 4 locations in the Mobile Area.

    I have also requested info from the Brick Pit regarding a late lunch / early dinner on Saturday the 16th. I believe they will be able to handle the group then.

    More info to follow

    OK...Update...
    We are programmed for the BRICK PIT Saturday Afternoon at 3:30 PM for BBQ Dinner! I got a call from the Owner who had recently shipped a bunch of BBQ up to Michael Stern for an event in NYC. He says that they will welcome the Roadfood Group that Saturday, so we are on the list there.

    Haven't heard from Wintzell's yet, but we will be looking for a time, Friday evening, at the Original Store (Downtown). The time will be a bit later in the evening to allow traveler's time to check in before dinner... (7 PM or so).

    LODGING- Tonight we used AAA.com to find a dog-friendly motel in Mobile...not as easy as it sounds. Anyway we now are booked at the local Red Roof Inn at exit 4 of I-65. Thats close enough to the Airport Blvd (exit 3) and to downtown for Wintzells. Rate was $50 a night..Cheap and the reviews I read said it was clean and friendly..so that's it for us. I did check several others, but the pet-friendly were pretty booked up already.

    Sounds good so far.

    I'm most likely going to combine this trip with a visit to some good friends outside of Charlotte NC whom I haven't seen in over 5 years.

    So my travel plans are somewhat in disarray right now, but I will most likely arrive in Mobile either Thursday evening or Friday and will leave Sunday.

    There are so many options- Fly Southwest into/out of Raleigh, or fly out of Birmingham and drop the car rental there- or fly into Charlotte, get a rental, drop off the rental, fly from Charlotte to Mobile and then Mobile back to Providence (Continental has a great deal right now) either way it would cost about the same

    I will probably drive down early Friday morning from Knoxville. It is about a nine hour drive but if I leave Knoxville at 5:00AM I should be there about 1:00PM.

    As I recall, there is a bunch of hotels on the north side of town on I-65 close to the airport exit. The last time I was there, I stayed at the Courtyard by Marriott. I have stayed several times at the Marriott Resort in Fairhope but it is a bit pricey but is a excellent location right on the bay.

    I am excited about Wintzell's. I will OD on raw and fried oysters plus a bowl of gumbo. I really like their menu. I also like Al's choice of BBQ.

    I am certainly hoping to be there, but it will depend on work. I might not know until just a week before.

    Mr. Mayor-
    You said earlier in the thread you were looking for a suggestion or two in Pensacola for those who tour the Naval Aviation Museum. When I was in Pensacola in October, I had breakfast at Coffee Cup and lunch at Jerry's Drive-in and gave both of them a thumbs up. I don't think either could hold a real big gathering, but would be good choices for a smaller group.

    I agree with Oneiron339 that the Dew Drop Inn is a really good Roadfood spot. And if you have a serious sweet tooth, this place just across the bay is a "must eat".
