Egg Nog and Liquor

For my upcoming holiday party, I am going to put out "shots" of eggnog with a bit of liquor in them and topped with whipped cream and nutmeg. But, I am still debating over which liquor is best in eggnog -- whisky, rum or bourbon?? Anyone have a preference? What about other fun holiday drinks....

Rum I was going to buy some eggnog last week but right next to it were quarts of cherry chocolate milk another holiday special I guess. I couldn't resist and grabbed the cherry chocolate milk. I liked it. My wife didn't. So after that first tasting I reverted to my teen years, reached into the fridge and drank straight from the carton knowing I would be the only one drinking it. It was great.

I vote for rum but then I always vote for rum. I like heated apple cider, add rum, then stir with a cinnamon stick. Guaranteed to deliver that warm, fuzzy Christmas feeling.

Rum, always. And no whipped cream. Try either Mt. Gay or Cruzan.

We've always preferred bourbon. Specifically, Jim Beam. pb

Rum is best, but an inexpensive Brandy also works well, and I'll bet a Bourbon would also work. But not Rye or Scotch. And dont waste any expensive sippin whiskey on your eggnog. Cheers, John

Silk Nog and Sailor Jerry spiced rum. Freshly grated nutmeg on top. Christmas Dragnet on the record player. That's the plan for tonight as we set up the tree.

Sounds like I have a verdict - rum it will be - i think i'll go with spiced. But why no whipped? I mean these are meant to be in little shot glasses that are going to be served on an appetizer tray...i thought that the whip would be decorative...i guess i'll just have to try a couple to see what works..mmmmm.

I used to spike mine with 151 Bacardi. Since I have given up spirits, I might try to spike any eggnog with High Life Beer from Miller. Since I have trouble with some dairy products, I'll just take the Millers.

Traditionally topped or served with toast to sop it up with. Wassailing is the tradition of going door to door singing and requesting wassail in return. Though they also did wassailing back in the middle ages to bless a harvest or to pray for a good harvest. They would hang a piece of sopped toast in the trees and 'awake' the trees to scare away evil spirits. Many make cider for their Wassail but it's not in keeping with the original. Unless you use hard cider of course, then all is forgiven. Personally, I hated it...ugh, gag. But I'm not fond of beer, ale, wine or hard cider.

I'm a bourbon man, but a lighter blended whiskey works well too. Don't forget the brandy option. My Dad used to whip up store-bought egg nog in the blender with some booze (bourbon, brandy or "rye" aka blended) and serve it in small cups with a dusting of nutmeg. It was actually very good, and not like drinking melted ice cream as the straight store egg nog usually is. It's better if you can find a brand without the rum flavoring. The best egg nog I ever had, though, was a home made recipe we did in college. I remember that the egg yolks, booze and sugar rested in the fridge for a few hours or overnight before mixing with beaten egg whites, lightly whipped cream, and I'm not sure what else. The booze component was: bourbon, brandy and rum! We had a very successful holiday party that year.

I just can't stand the taste of scotch, and Drambuie is scotch-based. I'm sure it would be fine for anyone who likes scotch.
