There is a local diner called "R" Place in Morris Illinois off of I80 and route 47, watch for the signs. Good burgers and shakes and they have quite a collection of old toys, lunchboxes, etc. Just a little FYI... ever since they opened the new I355 extension I80 through this area has been a zoo, good luck and happy trails.

I was looking through posts about traveling cross country on I-80 which I plan to do from California to Vermont in October. Found your post and would welcome any advice about historical spots you especially recommend. I will be traveling by myself and hope to break up the monatany of the trip with some interesting stops. Willing to go 15 miles off of 1-80 if there is something worth my time. Any recs on food also appreciated!

Interstate 80 basically follows the same route opening the way to the westcoast. Pull off occasionally to appreciate history.
      Make the trip an adventure.
Rouxdog wishes you a good journey.

An interesting historical stop if you visit their museum is the Amana Colonies in Iowa. The restuarants listed are all pretty good.

I STRONGLY recommend Champagne's Supper Club in West Branch, Iowa for some truly amazing Cajun food. http://www.cajunfoodandspices.com/

The exit is the same as for the Herbert Hoover National Historic Site (he was born there) so easy enough to find, right off I-80.

The proprietors are Katrina evacuees from Mississippi who relocated to Iowa, and brought their catering skills with them.

Scenery is ok fo awhile but give good old tourist traps I love em. Cheyene was the only interesting city I enjoyed, mt favorite has always been I10

              Hey Buster,
I could probably follow you all over the USA and eat and enjoy myself.  I just experienced the Hamburg Inn 2 in Iowa City for the first time and I will be going back!  Had a burger and pie and loved 'em both.
