Where did Tutti-Fruiti go?? Thu, 12/13/07 5:37 PM (permalink)
Hi,
Do you all remember Tutti-Fruiti Ice cream? It was big in the 50's. If you don't remember it,it was basically Vanilla ice cream with fruit cocktail mixed in it. I loved it as a kid,but you don't see it anymore. Perhaps the name is a turn off. Anyone seen sightings of Tutti-Fruiti???

It probably ran off with Dipper Dan's bubble gum flavor, the pink kind!. That ice cream I loved, never cared for the kind that had the gum bits in it though.

It really doesn't sound like something you couldn't make yourself.

Well I know that Guerlain makes a perfume called Tutti Kiwi which costs $50 for a smallish botlle.

I bought the Pamplemousse when I was in Europe, but with the Euro/$ thing, it was the same price in US. They also make Meiissa Basil, Angelika and Herbes/Minthe.

Maybe that's where all the ice cream flavoring went!

I did a search on it. Found it in the Food and Wine Dictionary. Originally it meant "all-fruits" and referred to what my mother called "brandied fruit," which was all the rage for a little while in the early-mid Seventies. It seems as if you would be hosting a sub-standard dinner party if you didn't have brandied fruit with vanilla ice cream for the dessert. My mom kept the jar around for a few years, but she dumped it after a while.

The dictionary said that eventually it morphed into ice cream with diced candied fruit. And the third and last definition was "a synthetic and fruity syrup used to flavor ice cream, etc."

I'm wondering what the tutti-frutti of yore was like. Did it have bits of fruit or was it "fruit"-flavored ice cream?

I also found a tutti-frutti syrup recipe that sounded OK. The foreword said it was kind or tart so you could add more sugar if you liked. I think you could add peaches or apricots or cherries as well. Just no bananas.

                For the Tutti Frutti Syrup:
                1/2 pint strawberries,
                1/2 pint blackberries
                1/2 pint raspberries
                3/4 cup sugar
                1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Bring to a boil, carefully, let cool, and strain.

Actually I was thinking about this some more & fruit cocktail (canned anyway) sounds unappealing in ice cream. I bet you could make it even better!!!

Dole has all kinds of frozen fruit now, you could get a couple different kinds & make some updated Tutti Fruitti! Pineapple, cherries, strawberries, peaches, blueberries, raspberries would be good, just give the bigger ones a rough chop so they're all the same size. Get a bucket of ice cream, let it get nice & melty. Mix it all together in a big bowl & refreeze it in smaller containers. I bet that would be really interesting.

Oh & I haven't bought from Guerlain since they stopped making my signature scent, Champs Elysees.

I sniffed around a little bit more and I think I have the answer. Seems like the tutti-frutti the OP remembers was made of green papaya, dried, candied and dyed different colors. Found a reference to it being banned somehow as unhealthy for children, so put two and two together and I guess one of the dyes, or heck, some other artificial ingredient, as the ice cream had to be flavored somehow, was discovered to be cancer-causing or some such.

I found one quote from a person who described it as tasting "kind of like Dreamsicle and dried apricot mixed together." Does that ring a bell?

Oh, and apparently it's still made in India and Pakistan. Look for it in Indian groceries and maybe you will find it.

Well,I can tell you all, because I remember it well ferom the 50's. Tutti-Fruiti(yes,"all Fruit") was a vanilla ice cream with lots of pieces of fruit coctail size fruit in it. I was too young to remember if it was dried or not...but boy did the fruit flavor that vanilla ice cream. Most brands made it!! As kids we all wanted that red cherry. My question still stands, has any roadfooder in their travels, ever come across this. Maybe a small ice cream place makes it homemade.

                          TUTTI-FRUTTI ICE CREAM

                          1/2 pt. whipping cream
                          1/2 c. powdered sugar
                          1/4 c. drained crushed pineapple
                          5 maraschino cherries
1 1/2 tbsp. maraschino cherry juice
                          1 tbsp. lemon juice
                          1/2 tsp. salt
                          1/4 tsp. vanilla
                          1/2 banana, mashed

Whip cream stiff, add sugar and fruit mix. Pour into bowl and freeze for about an hour, stir and freeze some more. Should be ready to eat in 2 hours.

That recipe for tuttu fruit ice cream reminds me of the banana split ice cream that I see at the store.

The Dumser's Dairyland shops in Ocean City MD sell a flavor that reminds me of tutti-fruitti. It's called Hawaiian Delight and has chopped up cherries, pineapple and bananas in it.
