Screwdrivers

After a billion or so Screwdrivers, I cannot believe people who say they can taste the difference between, say Popov Vodka and Absolut or Stoli, when mixed with orange juice, give me the cheap stuff when not on the rocks, which is hard enough by itself. Can any of you really tell the difference?

I agree with you with one caveat. The taste of vodka made from sugar cane is detectable. I had a friend comment on it in a bloody mary and I checked the bottle and she was correct. Cakes

I can. The cheap crap has a more medicinal flavor to it that the OJ can't hide, in addition to a certain harshness at the back of the gullet. And it smells different. I was drinking screwdrivers the first time I got drunk, back when I was 16.

For mixed drinks I use Smirnoff, as for a screwdriver get some blood orange juice if you can. That makes a great screwdriver. Some like to mix the blood orange with regular 50/50.

I wish I could drink screwdrivers, but they give me the worst headaches...even if I only have one.

You may not taste the difference, but have them made with "Popov" or some other bar vodka and you'll know the difference later ... especially after "a billion" ...

Like enginecapt et al, I can taste and smell the difference between cheap (Kamchatka) and better (Smirnoff) vodka. And the point about headaches is a good one. Cheaper booze yields more headaches/hangovers (though 'a billion' will also do the trick ) Chewingthefat - If you can't taste/smell the difference and you have no ill effects, consider yourself lucky and save cash on the low end vodka. Thanks, Kevin

Ah the screwdriver. I would think it was the first mixed drink of 75% of people. The gateway booze.
