 Michigans??????? (or red hots)

Is anyone familiar with Michigans (sometimes called red hots)? They are a local favorite in Plattsburgh NY where I grew up. I am looking for the michigan buns that these restaurants use. I understand they get them from Freihofers but I cannot find any on the web. They are buns that are not split and come 8 in a package.

      I understand they use closed end buns to help hold in the sauce and toppings but when I was up there last fall my dogs were on regular buns. The hot dogs and sauce were very good!!

        What exactly is a closed end bun? Is that a bun that is sliced across the top instead of the side? New England style?

            The link provided by Michael Hoffman above has a picture of two Michigan dogs. If you check out www.mcsweeneysredhots.com there is a picture on the home page showing the closed ends. It seems to be a typical hot dog bun but with a different slit.

              OK, so I was treated to a homemade Michigan over 4th of July. A fellow camper brought a crock pot of the Michigan sauce which was very tastey. She got very defensive when it was referred to as a chili sauce. The recipe below was posted elsewhere is very chili-like, with the exception of the worcestershire:

              Chili Dog Sauce

              1 - 1.5 lb ground sirloin
              1 small onion, diced
              3-4 garlic cloves, minced
              4-5 shakes Worcestershire sauce
              1 T red pepper flakes
              1 heaping T chili powder
              1 heaping T cumin
              1/2 can or so tomato sauce
              1/4 cup Head Country BBQ Sauce
              Salt & Pepper to taste

              ...So I don't understand why she got so excited. She claimed to have a proprietary recipe from a famous Michigan joint. I wondered if it wasn't some derivation of the Cincinatti chili w/o the cinnamon and allspice...

              I liked the sauce but it completely covered the taste of a good hot dog. My friend says its not about the hot dog, and I can understand that...but lets face it, I don't want to eat a hot dog unless its a quality dog...so I am basically conflicted.

              Anyway, can someone help me w/ the history of the sauce, and why people get upset when you call it chili sauce...I don't want to offend anyone else..

                  Thanks...that helps...so I am right, it is basically a chili sauce, and my friend can un-bunch her panties any time now...I may e-mail her that link...

                      The above recipe is very similar to my Chili Dog Sauce.

                      Chili Dog Sauce

                      1 lb ground chuck
                      2 beef bullion cubes
                      1 cup water
                      1 small onion, diced
                      1 heaping T chili powder
                      1 heaping T cumino
                      1 T red pepper flakes
                      2 T Worcestershire sauce
                      3-4 garlic cloves, minced
                      1/2 6 oz can tomato puree
                      1/4 cup Head Country BBQ Sauce
                      Salt & Pepper to taste


                      Brown meat in a skillet, drain.
                      Return to skillet.
                      Add a cup of warm water with two beef bullion cubes dissolved in the water.
                      Simmer 20 minutes or until meat is tender.
                      Add remaining ingredients, simmer 10 minutes.
                      Add water if needed for desired consistency.

                        If anyone from lower New York wants a good Michigan aka Coney dog, check out the Coney Island Cafe in Middletown, NY.
