Montgomerys Ribs Thu, 03/13/08 7:04 PM (permalink)
Was talking to a guest in the restaurant today, and as he is from Cinncinati, we were speaking of food there. He mentioned a place called Montgomerys Inn that sells more ribs than any restaurant in the country(including shipping, etc)Am dying to hear if anyone has tried them...

Very underwhelmed but it has a nice location. My BIL from Cincinnati swears by Racine's Oh Dennis.

            Ann,
I second ALL of the comments about over-rated and over-sauced Ribs. Even the the frozen BBQ they package and sell at Costco doesn't measure up to it's competitors.
I would rate it below Famous Dave's...Quite a distance below !! and 50% higher in price!

Total waste of money, time, and calories. The Montgomery Inn exists as a tourist trap and a highly overpriced magnet for locals who don't know anything about real 'Que and think that an abundance of sports memorabilia and autographed 8x10s of sports stars and movie idols mean more to making a good restaurant than the food they serve. In other words, the joint is for suckers.

This is not to say that there isn't any good Barbecue in Cincinnati. Pit To Plate, Jim Dandy's, even Barbecue Revue are all much better options than Montgomery Inn.

              Buddy

P.S. ann, you're not missing anything. Speed Queen serves infinitely better Barbecue.

              B.

Im no barbeque expert but we thought the food was excellent and for sure they had the best homemade Blue cheese dressing ive ever had on their salads!! spent the weekend in cincy and really enjoyed the place as well as the Precinct Steakhouse. Thought both were on the money!

Montgomery Inn is fine if you don't think of it as barbecue. I think of it as braised ribs with barbecue sauce, and frankly I like them, a lot, just for different reasons than "real" barbecue.

P.S. That said, they do have their definite duds, including the worst fried shrimp I've ever eaten.

Allow me to add a little to this overall topic....

First, sadly, those who note that Montgomery Inn is famous for BBQ and sells a ton of them and etc etc are correct. Bob Hope (most notably of many) swore by these ribs, and I grew up thinking their ribs were some of the very best things to eat on this earth. Montgomery Inn is arguably the very most popular restaraunt in town. They do a ton of business, and you'll wait in line a long time most evenings.

Second, those who are saying it is oversauced with a very sweet sauce and is not real bbq are also correct. The ribs are boiled offsite and finished on the grille at the restaurauts (there are 3 locations locally). The only smoke they see are the bit they get on the grill. Next to nothing.

Bottom line is that many Cincinnatians (like me) grew up thinking that the word "bbq" referred to the sauce applied to the meat, ie bbq ribs were ribs cooked with bbq sauce. It is only in the past 3-5 years that real BBQ joints have started to take hold in this town, including not only the three Buddy Roadhouse mentioned above, but several other independents plus the underrated City BBQ chain out of Columbus. It's a virtual explosion, a renaissance of real smoked bbq in this city. Cincinnatians are just starting to learn what real bbq is.....and on the flip side, that what what Montgomery Inn is selling is not bbq. It'll take a while - this is a very set in it's ways kinda town.
