Stolen NYC Burger advise

On a sports site I read a posting about burgers in NYC Poster #1 said he had just been to "The Spotted Pig" 314 W.11th and the buger was excellent---kegged beer was great----stringer fries with herbs reminded him of San Francisco-----and the place looked great and felt very comfortable----but the Burgers were $17 and the casked beer $9 a glass. Kinda steep. Then another poster advised that he get on the subway and ride over to Queens to Donovan's Pub which (according to NY Magazine) has the best burgers in the 5 boros of NYC, They are in Woodside at 58th and Roosevelt. Even adding in the subway fare you will probably be way ahead in Queens----if Donavan's is as good as advertised.

Donovan's is pretty good. Certainly worth the $2 subway fare. Take the #7. Have the burger with the fried onions. :)

Hey Dive I looked up Donavans and here is what the review said-- Juicy, flavorful, char-broiled 1/2 pounder with home cut french fries. Best burger in the 5 boroughs. Only price I could find was for a bacon cheeseburger and it was $7.95 in 2006. As compared to the one in the city @ $17.00 ----- and the waitresses all have brogues. Faith and begorra.

He no doubt meant "advice", more or less meaning "recommendation." Meaning that he borrowed someone's posting/blog/review/trip-report.

A seventeen-buck burger's not your cup of booze? How about this? If you're not a fan of the cheap dollar-menu burgers at your local chain burger joints, Old Homestead Steakhouse in Manhattan has the beef for you. The west side restaurant Tuesday turned the favorite American classic into a Japanese luxury when it unveiled its 18-ounce $81 burger, made from the highest grade of Japanese Kobe Wagyu. http://wcbstv.com/food/81.dollar.burger.2.689522.html

Michael--in 1983/4 The Old Homestead had no real ladie's room. It was strickly a guys place----great meat and potatoes place. They hired me to design a ladie's room for them because of the influx of female customers who complained about the 3-0 x 5-0 area with a toilet and wall hung sink and they didn't like the door that swung in and had a hook and eye to keep it shut. I stole some space from the men's room, which was huge, and it worked out fine. An 18 oz burger means a very large doggy bag, and $81 means no eatin' out for 3 weeks.

You mean they ruined the place willingly by doing something for people of the female persuasion?

Michael, that's exactly what they did. Then someone put up a sign "No Smoking" and pretty soon the Old Homestead was a very nice Steak and Chop house just like a lot of others. Nothing unique any more !!!!! And Mrs Schnauzer did indeed.

In Boca Raton, at the Old Homestead Steakhouse, they serve a $100 burger that has meat from Japan, Argentina and the USA: That will get you 100 Double Cheeseburgers at McDonald's.

I believe the title of this thread meant to say "advice" not "advise".Does that make more sense, now Pigiron? I too was a bit confused.

I will take your advice, but I advise you that an apostrophe should be used to denote posession and not plurality. So, while your post's puncutation was flawed, the information, as in all of your posts, was excellent. By the bye, did you design the 'ladies' room for McSorley's Old Ale House as well? That was another travesty. cheers, jf

Mr Fisch Grape Dear Sir Youse is absolutely correct, post's is possessive when it was meant to be plural. Pardon-ay moi!!! Nope, McSorley's was not my doin'. And it was a travesty, I agree. I did do the men's room at the Algonquin Hotel though----it's down a flight, right under the famous "Round Table".

Mariner, When asked where a ladies' room was at Rainbow and Stars, the long-lost cabaret at the Rainbow Room, our Maitre d', Bismarck, would say.... "Madame, go out the door to your left and proceed to elevators. Press the down button and get in the next car. Once in the lobby of the building, go out the closest exit and take a right. On the corner of 49th an 6th you will find Hurley's Tavern. Go in and take a right...go down the stairs and you'll find a ladies' room." If she had held on that long, the woman would say, "Is that the only ladies' room?" Biz would say "Of course not, but you only asked where a ladies' room was..." Back to burgers, though, when I was working at Rainbow, we would often go over to P.J. Clarke's for a burger after work. The other 'classic' burger was at the Corner Bistro in the Village. The new entry, in my book, is the Burger Joint in the lobby of the Parker Meridien on 56th. What can I say...I'm a classicist. jf p.s. I have been to several of your 'rooms.' I approve. Everything came out fine.
