No Yellow Pages for Big Red's so I guess I would have to say that it either never opened or didn't make it. The other 3 are pretty much downtown and I don't get there very often, but I'll keep them in mind. Thanks! Brad

After seeing Wanderingjew's Philly report on cheesesteaks the answer is you gotta have onions in my opinion.

The onions are just as important to the cheesesteak as the cheese.

I don't know where I'd find a cheesesteak here in Madison/southern WI, but if I could I think I'd like it wit if the onions are chopped small and well cooked, otherwise witout. Top it with provolone cheese, please, and maybe some mushrooms if they're available. No peppers or anything else, thanks. There's gotta be someplace around here that makes a passable version... Brad Why not try this product and make youo own? http://www.stehouwerfrozenfoods.com/product_ribeye.htm They're available in supermarkets throughout the Midwest. And they'rereally good.

The building in Milwaukee on 2nd and Florida is very interesting. It houses The Philly Way on the south, Caroline's Jazz Club on the corner in the middle and Soup Brothers on the west. I don't know how many people have a hard time finding the cheesesteak business; even people that drive by it every day. I've been there several times and it really is good. Charley's Grilled Subs are nothing I'd order again; generic franchise food. Chubby's I haven't been to.

I suppose they'd be essential if one ate onions. I hate onions and peppers and never eat them, and am fine without them. Growing up in Philadelphia, obviously I've been eating steaks all my life (yes, we call them steaks or cheesesteaks), and have had absolutely no problem specifically requesting a plain cheesesteak with extra cheese (and mushrooms sometimes!).

Yep I prefer a wiz without, but will occasionally dabble with the onions. Like Harriet and celery stated if you don't like onions it will ruin the steak for you if there are onions ontop
