What's Your Official State Dessert? Wed, 04/23/08 2:59 PM (permalink)

As a native New Yorker, I suppose our official dessert would have to be the apple pie - or maybe the cheesecake. I know that the state fruit is the apple; so, I suppose the argument in favor of either the apple pie or the cheesecake would be a heated one. Of course, you'd first have to convince the NY legislators to actually spend time debating the idea in Albany.

But, the precedence has been set by the State of Maryland, who, besides having a State Crustacean and State Beverage already representing some food groups, has debated and voted to name the Smith Island Cake as the Official State Dessert. I'm sure this news will please the Rockfish, the Oriole, the Checkerspot Butterfly, the Astrodon Johnstoni, the Diamondback Terrapin and the Chesapeake Bay Retriever. Congratulations Maryland Residents; you can now eat your cake and officially have it as your own, too!
